I fish mainly for trout and I’ve always maintained that you do need some type of adjustable and fairly smooth drag if you fish for trout and large (20″ and above) trout are a good possibility. Just a click drag or a coarse uneven drag – and you are just asking for trouble in my opinion.

Smooth running yes, agree totallty, but click and no drag is just fine…. even better with the option to plam a bigger fish. I’ve fly fished for trout that average above 20″ for over 30 years and landed browns in fast flowing streams up to 14 lbs in weight, Rainbows to 12 lb. I can’t recall a single instance with a trout that I had wished for more of a drag capability than a click and pawl…

On Saltwater species they are a necessity of course.

You can judge a man by the size of things which annoy him.

I agree with Mike in that i need to adjust a drag for small hooks nymphing and big fish..  I sometimes use number 20 gnats in a weather   cooldown in the spring for 4 lb+ fish..  I depend on the drag to tell me what the correct pressure the terminal system will be able to tolerate and still get the fish..  If he runs for it, and breaks off, I had the best settings possible, thats my luck, the system couldnt do anything about it…  Next I like to tinker with the darn thing..  The reel that i use and like best is the evolution.. I can adjust it at the minimum drag I want..  This i can also do with the canyon..   I bought a lamson , didnt like the minimum drag setting and called them..  He was at breakfast with his family it sounded, but said that i could not change anything with that reel. Also  the knob to turn the drag has no clics or tension adjustment to the nob itself,   and could spin in tackle bag or hitting the coat.. Poor design in my opinion.  Im quite worried the drag will come off, and the reel will back lash on a fish of a lifetime..   With the evolution what worked yesteday will work today, I may change some clicks  one way or the other, but I know it will be right there where I last put it..  Dave
