Dave I like your testing method. Were these rods all on lone or do you actually own them all? I think the new Z-AXIS is an amazing rod! I spent a half day on the Big Horn this past fall chucking tandum streamers at big browns with this rod and was amazed at how easy it was. That said I am also a huge fan of the BIIx. I own this rod in a 4wt and it is by far my favorite dry fly rod.

As it has been said on this board a 100 times before. It’s all about personal taste. What works for you may not work for the next guy and visa versa.

i own them, and only can go out with the 5wt b2x  and 6wt  z axis and  8 foot silver label 4wt, shoot to my porch with the porch lite on at night in below zero temps, becous its dark when i get off work. .   this helps explain the madness to my methods and writings.. cabin fever :P..   im actually looking for comments like all the ones im getting to figure out what has gone wrong for me with the 5 wt b2x..   competent anglers around helena keep saying the 5 wt in your choise of mfgs  is THE rod for the missouri..  i just got a message on another list that said accuracy is  a factor of lenght..  im beginning to wish i got the  8 1/2 foot  5wt b2x..(that would be for me)  but i should have tried the x axis 5wt also becouse the stronger tip would give ME more accuracy..,maybe not thenext guy…  the fish here on the mo wont move for a trico, it has to be perfectly in his path,,  accuracy is everything..  im also realizing that with the low water and hot weather were having in late summer makes   a soft presentation a must..  so i think your on the right track with the 4wt b2x..  what lenght is it.?  the 4 wt 8 foot silver lable cant be pushed beyond  35 feet, i cant see a trico or midge etc, any further anyway,, if that far,,  the 4 wt usually  will only come down soft with most casts, and it is as accurate as the 5 b2x in a 9 foot rod for me, if not more accurate….  i bought the 590 wt b2x becouse i figured all these people who own them and are totaly elated with it cant be wrong..  if you completely read andersons shootout on the yellowstone angler, anderson explains that the tip on the b2x is weak and this couses accuracy problems at abut 30 feet i think he said,

    Hi Dave!

Are you a Helena boy? I guide out of Deer Lodge and live in Missoula during the winter. I with you on the cabin fever thing! I don’t think I have ever seen so much freakin ice on the Blackfoot in my life! Could be interesting when things warm up!

My B2x is a nine footer. I made the rod myself which is probably why I like it so much! Plus when building a rod you can manipulate the action a little by the number of wraps you put on your guides and the ferrule (sp?) ends of the rod.

I know exactly what you mean when it comes to throwing that small crap on the MO! I call it poke and hope! I suppose that is why I only fish the MO in the spring and the fall. Egg patterns in the spring for rainbows and lots of streamers in the fall for browns!

    Hey Dave,
You might find this article interesting on fishing the Mo.

I think at that distance a real good caster could take a $19 Wal-Mart fly rod and hit the mat on cue most every time. IMO all rods have their own personalities, none of which are worth 5 to $600 more then a basic entry level stick of graphite.
I own several Sage, St Croix, Dan Craft, Cabelas, and Loomis rods. I just bought a St Croix Premiere on clearance for $50 that casts ((((to me)))) every bit as good as any I’ve casted. I like owning the best as much as the next guy but the idea of a high dollar rod making someone cast better is,, well, a dream.  :-X

MikeA, if you’re sure in your convictions, I have an el-cheapo rod I’ll let you use while I’ll use the same weight and length in one of my favorite rods and we’ll have a go at it.
    You game?

You willing to make me that bet, Jack?

Yeah, If all we are talking is accuracy at 35 feet I’ll take you up on that too.

you can determine the best flycaster by both throwing their rod at an accuracy point or open can.. then you switch rods and cast again and add the scores up..

Targets at 35′, 55′ and 75′ and yes, I’m willing to make that bet!  😎 🙂
So you agree with this statement “but the idea of a high dollar rod making someone cast better is,, “?
If all we’re talking about is 35′ then all bets are off… maybe. Go much beyond that and I believe the rod has quite a bit to do with things.

I just don’t think so, Jack – not out to 75′.

Darn! I had just the rod set up for you too!  😉 True story. I know some mighty fine casters and according to all who threw it, this particular rod is the work of the devil I tell ya!

I had one of those years ago, a highend stick to boot, it didn’t act like that til i paid for it & took it home >:(
