As much as I support efforts of going green, this is one format I do not enjoy very much. It’s great for a supplement and gets the articles in front of more eyes, but I hope it doesn’t replace the printed page. This is Fly has it right, with better navigation along side what I would consider the best FF publication out there. There are things I would obviously change to their nav as well (like once I’m in the 2nd half of the rag, how can I go back to the first half without going page by page?) But I still like the physicalness of magazines. I like being able to take it with me wherever I want and the ease of being able to go back to them to reference articles, photos, etc. I can take them in the car, a waiting room, a plane, the beach, or even for when sitting on the can.
I may be a bit biased as well. My dad and uncle work in the printing industry. Until a year ago, my dad was working in the same building that my great grandfather worked in on a printing press as well. It’s an industry that is hurting, and my family sees the affects of that.
But the flipside to it, is that maybe this is going to be an important part of the green revolution. There are a lot of environmental issues with the paper industry and I’m sure the same goes for the ink and printing industries. Not to mention the fuel usage and emissions to ship the paper, inks, as well as for distributing the finished product. Now, a lot of printing is being outsourced to overseas then shipped back to the US. With the green revolution there will be less green for a lot of people here (paper industry, ink industry, printing, shipping, distribution, retail)….
On a business side of things, I’m surprised that advertisers aren’t putting more faith and agencies putting more value into web advertising. I can see an ad, click on it and go to the advertisers site to find out more about the product, then click and buy the thing without leaving my chair, all in a matter of minutes! “Call to action” out, “click to action” in! You have the potential to reach a world wide audience with more direct action than any mailer, print, radio or TV advert. I have a friend who does online marketing for companies and has noticed that companies owned by or run by younger people see a lot of value in web and social networking advertising, where as companies with older suits in charge do not see the value and within a few years may be left wondering why their market isn’t growing.

Wow, shots 90, 85 and 45 are absolutely amazing!
I saw that too Eric, something about they change to from blue to black or something like that depending on the direction they’re going.

Welcome to the board Jason, great shots! I don’t know how you do it, personally there is no way I’ve ever been able to put down the fly rod and start shooting. Especially when fish are rising like those shots.

I have to say, since the company I worked for tanked, I have been reminded at how tasty Ramen noodles and PB&J can be.
And in response to bill’s post. My truck cost $8400 (used with 21k mi on it), my most expensive rod was $139 and I have a few other budget level rods. All 4 of my rods are sub $200 (G.Loomis East Fork, Venture x2, Cabelas XSS). And all my gear catches fish. The point is, it’s only that expensive if you want it to be.

I’ve always found St. Croix to have some of the best photography and design in the Fly Fishing industry. Their site and catalogs have always been a major influence/inspiration to me. Previous designs of my site were much more similar to their look (I wasn’t biting their style, just what I was into at the time). Every time I look at their page I’m reminded I need to step up my game and that I need to take my St. Croix rods out for a stroll on a stream.

I think Albright Tackle is one of the most improved sites over the past few months. Previously it was a pretty weak site, but I really like their new layout and look. Their A logo with the fly looks sick too. I wish their banner image would change with each product. Kind of lame it doesn’t. They should hire me to shoot more photos for them!

This past summer I always borrowed my friend’s spray on sun screen when we went to the beach. Unfortunately it was 70spf and I was still embarrassingly white for a SoCal resident at the end of summer.

Wow I’m jealous! I’ve always wanted to fish and trek through Patagonia. I’m sure you’ll have a blast chasing the beast of trout that live in the rivers down there.
I may be making a stop at the Santiago airport in a few weeks on my way to Manaus, but won’t get to explore Chile. I’m still debating on weather or not to try to sneak an 8wt in my backpack. Could be interesting to go after Peacock Bass in the Amazon. Just don’t think I’d have the time to fish in the few days I’ll be down there.

what is the aperture of the 18-200. Getting a lens with say a 2.8 lens is going to help when light is low, but focusing is a bit more difficult when you have a shallow depth of field.

in reply to: How do you shoot a rod? Advice, Please. #66868

I’d shoot with the rod parallel to the lens. This would cut down on any distortion caused by perspective. Then you’re just dealing with the curve of the rod, which you’re not really going to be able to do anything about if you want the photo to look natural. You could shoot multiple shots and slightly rotate the rod with each shot, then combine them in Photoshop. Much like the way tattoo artist photograph sleeves or other tatts that wrap around body parts. That would give you better detail of the graphics/text but would look unnatural.

Lee, if I weren’t already traveling out of the country for a month in April I’d probably take you up on that offer. I’ve always wanted to get in on the lake run action up in your neck of the woods.

Darrin, Thanks for the suggestion. I need to stop in and talk to Dean about the project. I photographed his Robo Pheasant Tail pattern as an spec shot last year when I first started thinking about making this an ongoing project.

Will I sent you an email and Phil you’ll probably have one sitting in your inbox by the time you see this.

Not sure if anyone said this, but once you have finished any corrections in the Raw Converter and have it opened in the main program, use Adjustment Layers for curve/contrast/etc.!
These are non destructive on the image and can be turned on and off. For me, a lot of experimenting goes into making a final image and having the ability to go back and make adjustments or turn off adjustments is a (image) life saver. I often use multiple adjustment layers of the same type (with different settings) to effect different parts of the image using masks. Sometimes I change the blending mode on the adjustment layers for different effects.
Another tip is to do your Dodging and Burning on a separate layer. Instead of using the dodge and burn tool, I create a new blank layer. Set the blending mode to soft light. Then use the brush tool and paint with white to dodge and black to burn the image. My brush opacity is set to 10% most of the time. That way I can make small adjustments and make sure I do not over dodge or burn an area.
I try to be as non destructive as possible on my images. Using this work flow has enabled me to have more and more control over the image with the ability to make corrections if needed at a later time.

I myself have never used it, but I remember seeing great results from the program. Does it allow you to edit RAW files or are you working in jpeg only?
