I’m just getting into taking my post production up a notch (past Picasa basic edits), but I don’t have the cash right now to spend on Photoshop.

You might try GimpShop.  They try to duplicate the menu structure and look/feel of Photoshop.  Other than that it is still the Gimp.

EDIT– There is also Grokking the GIMP available online for free.

I myself have never used it, but I remember seeing great results from the program. Does it allow you to edit RAW files or are you working in jpeg only?

I think the GIMP is very powerful but also very non-user friendly.

    x2!

    Chad,

I’ll probably do both – I use Canon Photo Pro for RAW but might start using the GIMP.

I used to use Gimp for a while, but found it cumbersome.

GIMP will edit RAW files with plugins installed.  The downside is that support is spotty so check the plugins page for support.  One of the most popular seems to be UFRaw.

I got a copy of Photoshop Elements off ebay a few years ago for about $35. You might look there. They were OEM copies that someone was selling off. They came with serial numbers and registered just fine.
