Thought I’d post this to the “Unlimited Skin Cancer Thread”.

    Zach,

I’ve lived in the ATL most of my life and remember the “good ole days” when you could catch some really nice holdover fish below Morgan Falls.

If you look at some satellite photos (Google Earth or Terraserver) you can clearly see all the silt behind the dam. In my opinion, MF would be a prime candidate for a breach and mitigation. I’d be interested in how far that would extend the cold water fishery.

At some point…and we may be there now….there will not be enough “clean” water to dilute the treated wastewater effluent and the river below the city will be nothing more than a sewage canal.

    Abe,

I used a 10′ piece of aluminum tubing from either Home Depot or Lowe’s….can’t remember which. I believe it’s one-inch in diameter. It was very reasonably priced….but can’t remember exactly what I paid for it. Dang I’m getting old.

You can get a PVC “Tee” and some caps. Cap one end and epoxy the Tee to the other end with caps.

Here’s a photo of mine…..probably $40 bucks tops for the setup.

I did a similar trip two years ago. Camped at Flamingo a few days and kayaked the Glades and the bay. Then went over to the Marathon area and fished the flats from the kayak. We would kayak out to the flats….stake out the kayak and wade to the edge of the creek channels. We camped at Fiesta Key campground….mm70.

Nicely done Zach. Funny you mention Clingman’s Dome. As you know….the 8-mile spur road to the top is closed during the winter months. I got a wild hair one February day….and mountainbiked to the top.

    Fun stuff.

    Aaron,

I also have a D70s body that I use as a backup. If I were you….I wouldn’t sink too much money into a repair unless the body is/was lightly used. KEH has used bodies as low as 200 bones.

    Good luck.

Another reasonably priced housing for a P&S camera:

The Olympus E-PL1 camera body and Olympus PT-EP01 underwater housing.

On another note, Fisheye FIX now has a body to fit the Canon S-100.

A thousand times no on the oar rights.

This is how I fish.  Float downstream looking for “targets”.  See a nice fish get in position, drop anchor.  Drop into casting position by letting line out.  Of course the more line you release (scope) the more the boat will drift side to side.

Here is the important part.  Allow both oars to drop into the water.  They will both come to rest against the side of the boat and you now have two rudders, thanks to the oar-right keeping the blades vertical.  The boat tracks nicely in the moving water while you catch that big guy.

For the type of fishing I do, I don’t know how I could live without the Oar Rights.  Now if I was not stopping and positioning on fish in moving water, that would be something else.  But they are an essential component in how I chase fish.

Well said G! That’s exactly how I fish…primarily because I’m alone except for the dog 🙂 If I turn the oarblades vertical….no side-to-side drifting….but they eventually work their way to horizontal….and I start side-to-side again.

So maybe oar rights will work for my application???

    Michael,

I have the same driftboat trailer….and your right…it can be a little tough to get the boat off the trailer when you are somewhat level. As you can see…on the Gheenoe trailer, the bunks run parallel to the direction you are sliding the boat. With the Hyde trailer, the bunk runs perpendicular to the direction you are pushing the boat. So to answer your question…I don’t know if it would be easier to slide off. I really think the bunk slicks would help though. I can tell you this….they are mounted directly over the carperted bunk. If you put them on…and they don’t work….the screws would cause minimal damage to the carpeted bunk if you take them off.

I have two sections of the bunk slicks left over. I’ll put them on my trailer and see how it works. I’ll let you know. It will be a few weeks though…I store my boat in another location (closer to good trout water.

Michael…I’ve got the same oars. I seem to remember heating the rubber stops in scalding hot water and coating the wraps with some dishwasing detergent. It was still a tough job. I’m thinking of going with some of those “Oar Rights” or whatever they are called.

Nice job Aaron! Your post brought a smile to my face. If you’ll allow…..here’s my youngest and his first solo trout about 12 years ago:

…and here he is this past summer with 11 of his closest Jarhead friends in A-stan. I say all that to say this…cherish them while they are young…they do grow up fast!

Here’s to many more father-daughter fishing trips!

    Zach,

I bought some of these bunk slicks at Bass Pro last week. It took about 10 minutes to mount them on bunks. The stainless steel screws were included.

    http://www.basspro.com/Bunk-Slick-Boat-Trailer-GlideOns/product/1111100500571/315090

The boat slides back and forth with one hand!

BTW….are your trailer bunks too far apart? Mine are about 14 inches apart and extend all the way to the end of the transom…..so the weight of the motor is directly on top of the bunks. Your motor is pretty heavy so you may want to consider moving the bunks in a little to get them under the transom and motor. There is a lot of stress on that fiberglass transom and it is amplified when you are bouncing down the road.

Trent……like Bob….I’m no filmmaker but films that capture my attention are the ones that “go against the grain.” I found myself wanting to see the brookie actually strike the fly (if using a dry fly)….but that has been done to death so-to-speak.

I agree….a storyline would be neat. Maybe brief footage at the Waffle House at 0600 or something like that to set the stage….fixing the flat tire on the way to the stream, etc…

I like the transition between footage in your film and it is good video quality on my laptop. That is not always true with youtube stuff.

    My dos centavos.

What Bob said….Crazy Charlies are easy and fun to tie. Switch out with bead chain eyes and bar bells for different sink rates.

Seeing that you are from AL….Roll Tide….they also are quite effective on crappie.
