I’m getting ready to buy my first kayak (a Jackson Cuda).

    Abe,

I used a 10′ piece of aluminum tubing from either Home Depot or Lowe’s….can’t remember which. I believe it’s one-inch in diameter. It was very reasonably priced….but can’t remember exactly what I paid for it. Dang I’m getting old.

You can get a PVC “Tee” and some caps. Cap one end and epoxy the Tee to the other end with caps.

Here’s a photo of mine…..probably $40 bucks tops for the setup.

I did a similar trip two years ago. Camped at Flamingo a few days and kayaked the Glades and the bay. Then went over to the Marathon area and fished the flats from the kayak. We would kayak out to the flats….stake out the kayak and wade to the edge of the creek channels. We camped at Fiesta Key campground….mm70.

    Abe,

Probably getting out of your desired price range, but TFO – as Mangrove – sells 56 inch pole sections so you can make your own.

You need at least 10 feet if you are standing in the kayak.  That would allow you to pole around in 4 to 5 feet of water, depending on how tall you are.  Freedom Hawk makes a 12 foot aluminum kayak push pole for $99.  The carpon fiber model runs about $180.

Shipping can get expensive, but if you have a Freedom Hawk Kayak dealer around you, you may be able to get one from them.

You could also get a fiberglass or aluminum swimming pool pole, which would be a lot cheaper.

I’m just not sure that you need one.

I had the Native Paddle pole and loved it.

For the paddle, I’ve already convinced myself to get a Werner Camano and drop the coin.

Actually, I would forget the push pole.
