They say imitation is a sincere form of flattery.  So I shaved my head to look like a certain host of a fly fishing web blog!  Hahahaha.

No, seriously I had to shave my head for surgery tomorrow . . . going to have two lesions removed from my scalp. Unfortunately, this is not my first trip to the dermatologist to remove skin cancer and I’m only in mid-late 30’s.  Damn freckles and Scotch/Irish skin.  My previous lesions were on my back and arm but these two are going to be tough because they will have to remove a patch of hair in two spots, that is going to look pretty funny, aagghh.

Remember –  Use your sun lotion and protect your skin always.

Best of luck with it, Neal. Hopefully you’ll not end up looking like the half hair dude in the FedEx commercial :-).

    Seriously, good luck.

    Thanks for kind words guys.

Actually, it’s not a big deal; really more of a nuisance.  I keep up with the schedules exams, etc and catch this stuff early.

I just wanted to remind everyone to protect your skin on the water.  Especially the younger guys – it’s the damage in your 20’s that catches up to you later.

Here’s the scary fact – when I shaved my hair off tonight the sink was littered with GREY hairs!!!

I had two basal cell areas cut off of my right ear this summer, and I’m in my mid 30’s as well.

Good luck tomorrow and this is a huge subject for those outdoors and for precautionary purposes. One thing I would like to know is how do you protect yourself when out on the water?

On Salt I’ve got the complete cover but on Troutwater it looks a bit funny to my friends so I do just the Lotion thang. One thing I also learned lately was that it’ a very small difference between SPF 30 and 50. So thoe 100spf’s aren’t everything. I am out 100 days on the water and also work teh rest of the time outdoors, no matter what I put on my nose from burning (spf 50 and big bill cap) my nose still gets burned, any ideas on how to protect? Over the years I know my Rudolph nose will catch up to me sometime~

Thank goodness for hats, Buffs and sunscreen.

I’ve had so many basal cells removed….I’ve lost count. Like Neal and my Doc said…this damage was done 20 years ago. I don’t know if it can be attributed to ozone depletion but….it seems skin cancer is much more prevelant nowadays.

Good luck Neal….and tell the Doc to stitch it up tight….you might get an impromptu facelift out of this deal.

I just found out I have a few spots of solar keratosis, which is the precursor to skin cancer. Did your doctor have you try the topical fluorouracil cream before recommending surgery? I’d be interested in hearing more about your case since this is so new to me and I haven’t run across anyone who has had it. PM me if you wish.

I’ll be starting that treatment in January as I’ve been told it cause a reddish skin reaction (which isn’t very pretty).

Sorry guys, I would hate to see you guys shrivel up and burn under the African sun…

On a serious note… I am of Irish decent… Yip, I can’t handle the sun either… I have a few lesions on my hands, on my shins and tops of my feet… I am reluctant to check my ears…

Signs of a miss spent youth, I surfed, sailed, dived, basically, if it was in the sea, I did it…

Good Luck Neal, but knowing you, only the best will raise a knife to you…

My 1st run-in with skin-cancer was at varsity. A mate of mine was a life-guard, and in-and-out the sun for most of his life. In his 1st year they had to remove quite a bit of cancer from his back and neck, which affected movement in his left shoulder/arm – end of life-guard career

my dad taught us at an early age about the potential damage of the sun (maybe from his days at the epa, i’m not sure) he used to wear raybans and had sunlight reflect off the frame to his forehead and had skin frozen off

the smell of copertone reminds me of being on my grandparents balcony in florida with the coral reef out the back door and my parents making us load up on sunscreen

when fishing i wear long sleeves and pants even if its crotch hot out there (protects against bugs too), sung gloves, big hat, buff (such a great product), and shades. drifter’s pic above could be me

here is me covered up cept for my legs in the keys this past May

i load up with spf 45, my dermatologist gave me some spf 75 last summer. we keep it in the car for driving, in day packs, and in our bathrooms. plus it makes my lady smell like tropical drinks.

not only do i not want to have a florida tan, i don’t want to get skin cancer. there is always genetics and chance so we’ll see how well i do in the future

do they give fun pills  😀  when you get the skin taken off ?

    Neal…how did it go?

Even though we all end up looking like the “Uni-Fisher” in the Buff Wear…

…they sure do a nice job of protecting the face, neck, and ears from overexposure.

Those photos could be titled, “Three Inches of Snow in Six Inches of Grass”. Nice use of the depth of field……needs a little more saturation though. Glad you made it through!
