The facts:
41, Tasmanian born, saltwater bred, came to fly fishing too late.
Divorced once, remarried now, 3 stepkids.

Once had a real job, 20 years in newspapers mainly political reporting.

Now fly shop manager, guide, writer sometime photographer in Cotter Arkansas, on the banks of the White River.
Income?? what is that LOL
Actually its about 1/4 of what I was making when I left Oz 7 years ago. But I couldn’t go back to that.

First 3 years in the country I got to travel a lot, but it seems time is the crucial issue now.
So far the list of licences includes Tasmania, Australia, Alaska, Baja, Montana, Idaho, New York, Wyoming, California, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Michigan.
Now  Im introducing travel to the flyshop, and everyone thinks its about getting free trips  😮 LOl.

But yeh I miss the travel seeing new water, Im jonesing for the smell of the salt again. Want to go back to Montana/Idaho, more Alaska and I want to break my bonefish  cherry etc etc.
I still write some, here and there and Im new gear columnist for Australia and NZ biggest fly fishing magazine www.Flylife.com.au

But what I need to do with my stash is buy a house, and a new boat. Priorities.

Hoppers + low water

Equals 21″ of fun

Water levels have been a bit quirky Brett, not that much of a settled pattern like we hoped wwith nightly low water so you can get wading downstream, but when we have had it it had been good.
Boat fishing, either drift boats like Scott’s or river boats has been pretty good on the high water.

The hopper fishing has been spectacular at times, when we have had the low water. Ive had some superb days, wet wading having a blast. But of course it will be gone by October. Hopefully that late caddis hatch will be on, maybe some olives but the mainstays are midges, scuds sowbugs etc.

Sound like you have been down this way before but don’t forget Conclave if you are going to be in the area on these dates http://www.southerncouncilfff.org/conclave/conclave.php

Brings more people in so you can get some crowds but a good time nonetheless.

If you have any more questions ask away

Cheers

Too much fishing too little time.
I hunted as a kid, used to sell bunny rats around the neighbourhood, when I was mid teens, just to cover ammunition. We had ducks, kangaroo, rabbits a few goats to hunt back home, plus bowling over feral cats. Deer I never got into.
But I always preferred the water, hunting was just a change from fishing the salt, spear fishing, diving for lobster/crab/abalone, surfing etc
Then I discovered fly fishing LOl

Like to eat deer/duck etc way more than I do trout, but wouldn’t give up fishing time to chase them
I prefer to trade services for game.

Cheers

Hey drifter,
October Nov can be a lot of fun down here but december isn’t too bad either

But then again yesterday wasn’t too bad either

21″ brown, red leg para hopper, Rim Shoal, White River AR

Love that hopper fishing, should continue through september

Ive been wet wading the past few weeks, even in 105-6 degree weather,
Fish have been active, hungry, the water keeps you cool, drink plenty of water

Cheers

Just one recommendation

rainbow 32×27

Stacy Corbin and Fred Telleen. http://www.mysticfishing.com
Two great mates who keep sending me pics like this
I fished with them too long ago, they do a lot of wilderness floats through the limited access Kenai Canyon.

If you can go Sept-Oct less people, fish are concentrated and better shot at monster ‘bows.

I’d add more but everyone has covered it really well here

Have a great time.

Its funny reading this is like the debate going on in my head over this.
The fish rat side is going “”oooh big fish just down the road”” _ I live a mile from the White in Arkansas.

The greenie side is going “don’t you dare introduce foreign fish at the top of the foodchain, knucklehead”.

“Listen hippie, you won’t be squarking when I get a 30pound taimen eating mouse patterns”

“Hey what have you been smokin. there is still smallies, and walleye in the white, particularly in summer, then what about all the scuplin and trout. Shoot taimen would take 20″ trout for lunch”

“But But But they are big and … ah hell your a weenie Im going fishing …. “

😮 😮 😮 😮 😮 😮

I still like my Redington 5wt 5p fished it a lot, I actually prefer it to the newer model which is stiffer but I have nicer 4pieces in that style of rod. The Redington is like a relaxed old friend.

TFOs have their professional series 9’5 – 6wt and 8wt in 6 pieces, pretty similar to the 4pieces, maybe a touch more sluggish int he action but suprisingly good

Were very popular with our Harley riding customers in my previous store.

Is there guarantee against me setting it on fire 😮 🙂

Or like the guy I saw in MO recently who reglected to peg his tent down, and watched it sail into the river _ yeh it floated.

Can you tell I don’t camp LOL

Hey Zach, I’m still not sure how I managed to get Simms in there alongside the feminine hygiene products, powerbait and keystone beer, but it worked LOl And I had a lot of fun over there.

BTW Charlotte’ is threatening to come fishing with me over here _ should be a lot of fun, and I need to get a spinning rod out of her hand again. Have you ever seen her cast? Really, really nice cast, Joan Wulff educated, she was in the first graduate class of Joan Wulff instructors.

Hey Zach _ I get the hint. Can I change my nick or do I have to re-up

See Im such a shy retiring type LOL

Yeh Mt River is a great place. Hope we can make it a better shop, more fun place to come in hang out, shop online etc. You probably got the first of our Mountain River Journal’s today _ carrying over that weekly email-magazine-fishing report.

Here at the shop we all love those old timey buildings in Cotter too, but it was decided to stick with our highway frontage, for easier access for everyone heading to and from Bull Norfolk. We have 2600 sq feet and moving to 4000 _ modern strip mall type. Move in 2-3 months. Its going to be a classy fitout tho, with lots of wood, and space to display stuff, and for people to move around. HUGE fly selection. Still have familiar features, and of course the crew.

I know what you mean about personality _ but the funny thing is, since Ive been around people are laughing a bit more, a bit more spark. I think they had forgotten fly fishing is supposed to be fun and you can laugh, just about everyone there has a great sense of humor _ so Im discovering too.

Next time your down come in and hang out, play with some rods etc.

Great looking place. Ok I’ll ask where, name of the place.
Wish we could move our shop into a setting like that LOL.
Cinderblock on a highway doesn’t compete with that LOl
But the river is less than a mile

And we will have a new building come fall.

Good Lord I can’t go anywhere these days without meeting Aussies.
Just re-upped on here and who do I find but Morsie and DA.

Great job guys, as usual love your work.

Just getting settled here in Cotter, AR, after the big move, of wife, 3 kids, 2 dogs and a decent semi-trailer full of stuff.
