Ok Im in FF retail so take this for what it is worth. LOl
Both these would work. I used to use a “normal” waist pack, nice belt but under load was hard to access and find stuff.=, so I went back to a vest.

Then I bought a waterdance. stuff fits and I can find it. 3 compartments not 2. Flyboxes fit (2 large C&F waterproof in the back) and the waist belt is sooo comfortable under full load. Better than my outdoors waistpack.

I used to B^%$# to my fashion designer exwife about some of these issues ( i write a gear column too) why some clothing or outdoor or FFgear was designed.
I got stern explanations about the price on detailing (which we would know as features) and she was heavily involved in the production of a lot of stuff coming out of China.
Anytime you add a feature whether it be stitching, another pocket etc adds a cost. which gets passed onto you.

So look at the Fishpond/WJ or any outdoor product and look at the features. Someone has to stitch in the extra zipper and compartment, key loops etc etc. What do you pay for a coily retractor in a store $9? What’s it worth for zipper pulls you can open with one hand when its raining cold and your up to your waist in a river.

The final choice is yours, are those features worth the extra $50 or so to you. Its your wallet, noone is forcing you to buy either product.

I guess we will find out this weekend. Im with SA on Sunday morning so we shall give it a run.
I would think given Bruce Richards is behind it he would take into account things like guide/finger wear.

    But funnier things have happened.

Apparently there was some screwup at SA on the release of this line. Its not due to ship until October 3 But since Bruce Richards is going to be at the Southern Conclave in Mountain Home that weekend the line should be available for demos and We are hoping to get some stock in for the event.

At the very least Ill try to have a demo back in the store on Wednesday.

I don’t know too much about the Sharkskin other than the name, we were told it was all on a hush hush basis for the show launch. Was kinda suprised to see it online given we are an SA dealer.

No doubt just someone’s screwed up LOl

Ive cast a prototype which was closer to a 9-10wt.
The actual production model isn’t spoosed to be a “aggressive” but still a stout stick for throwing heavy flies on lakes.

This isn’t your average smallmouth rod. Stout, fast, and designed to lift/pull a fish out of cover, not play them.
Very very different from the X rod, which has that soft tip.

Great barramundi fly for Oz, and enywhere you need the grunt to throw big flies and put the hurt on fish fast. Pike, largemouth etc.

My fly fishing education was on Tasmanian lakes _ anything but boring.
If I couldn;t fish a dry, I used to sleep, I hated blind flogging streamers, and itsstill my least favorite wat to fish.
When I left Tassie for the US I didn’t own a fly undr a 14 and not one bugger ;D Life was good.

Not having that much experience on western lakes I was hesitant to post. But Joels advice is a good one, and my one shot at it was doing that outside of Laramie _ a cool hog pond filled with Kamloops.

    Streamers will work.
You are getting into the sinking line game _ don’t forget chironomids, practice your Figur 8 retrieves _ SLow

Don’t just fish the deep water, look at the edges, rainbows will patrol the dropoffs. weedbeds.

Not sure about the features on the lake etc whther the conditions would be right but _

On windy days do you see glassy “roads” over the rippled surface? If you do work them.

In tassie we called them windlanes _ how they work is complicated but treat them like the bubble line on a river _ they actually concentrate food. Get to their upstream end _ one with leaves, trash is best _

Hey Joel, speaking of memories you conjured another one. Not the rod, though I know how you would feel.

But Trout Slayer _ hard to find here in the South _ but those words bring back some fine memories of the Cellar in Ketchum, still wet from the Big Wood (?) serious caddis hatch and then this fine product and good company.
There is some less clear ones of the Casino later that night, shots being drunk from jewellery adorned belly buttons and one hell of a hangover.
    Fine memories.

A lot been said but I’d suggest that Zach’s experience with teh Dragon Fly is related to that lighter model not the Waterdance.
Ive guided/fished out of mine for the past two years.
Comfort factor is excellent the waist band is excellent, wide supportive and importantly takes the load off my neck/shoulders, old football indjury.

The Waterdance takes two big C&F waterproofs in the back, (closest to my body) side by side vertically.
In here goes some spare spools of tippet, some leaders, strick on indicators etc. I can also squeeze in another small flybox if necessary.
Middle pocket I use one SA waterproof box, and a smaller compartment box of microball indicators. Licence, tubs of shot, miscellaneous crap etc. Any other boxes of hatch specific flies.

Front pocket has a huge fold down fly table for go to patterns. No boxes in here, mainly flies, spare knick knacks I need for the day. Dry Shake, blah de blah. I keep a pair of Fishpond nippers and fishpond zinger here.

I don’t use the outside tabs much, just a pair of pliers and a rescue tool (driftboat anchor rope cutter) on the waist band. The neck strap I sling from the back, under the shoulder s over the back of the neck just to hold the net and no other weight. If I po one arm out I can pull the pack to the side or front for working out of

Add a lanyard with working tippet, haemos, shot and a few indicators, nippers

When I saw the title and the author I thought this was going to be about hair????? ;D ;D

But I knopw what you mean, I had an old Diawa Lochmore click drag which when everywhere from Tasmania to Montana, Alaska twice, all over and I finally wore the teeth off the cog on the spool. There is some serious line burns in the frame from big sockeyes, etc.
I would have replaced the spool but its too good to throw away and too cheap to repair.
Hence it sits over my desk, full of memories.

What is this another weenie waving contest??? 😮 😮 😮

Why does one have to be better than the other. Sometimes I think as fly fishers we spend more time/effort on putting labels up to seperate ourselves from everyone else than actually fishing.

Appreciate them both for their qualities to fish. These are mere tools after all, though to the individual owner they do become more than that, but its not like its going to improve your personality, intelligence or attractiveness to the opposite sex. ;D

Fish ’em if you like them

    Lamson litespeed for sure. LOL

Actually if anyone is interested I do have an older Smoke 3 _ possibly the sweetest color they ever did. I could deal on.

Nothing wrong with the Nautilus tho. Ive just not played with them much.

Spent more time with the Ross-Lamson and Sage 2500 reels. The latter is gorgeous, love them.
