MemberI, too, appreciate the beauty of bamboo rods, and given that the stuff is grown in my family ancestral lands gives it a bit of added appeal in my case.
For me, the durability issue is more related to my own tendencies to abuse and inattention.

MemberIt’s a very interesting experiment to drive a sharpened spike of bamboo through a block of maple. I have no means to test this, but I’d be very, very surprised if one couldn’t do the same with a similarly pointed section of solid (not hollow) carbon-fiber. (The requirement of it being solid is so the comparison is fair.)
I would actually suggest that it is a more accurate comparison to compare a solid section of bamboo with a hollow section of carbon fiber, given that a majority of bamboo rods are solid and, to my knowledge, every graphite rod is hollow.

MemberAs a huge tinkerer, I’d love to verify this in real life, but this one doesn’t seem too practical to pull off.
In any case, both are long proven to be more than adequate materials to make quality rods.
BTW, there are a good number of very nice graphite rods in the under $250 range. Not “top-end”, but very nice in most ways. A number of them even come with lifetime warranties.
NBD,
If you are a huge tinkerer, you really should try making a cane rod.

MemberI think the problem in general with human beings and in particular, in this instance, with fly fisherman, is sometimes we forget we’re not all the same height, weight, have the same eye and hair and skin color, build, shoe size, some like Coke, some like Pepsi, whatever.
If we were all cookie-cutter fishermen, there’s only be one rod company, one reel maker, etc.
Problem is when we start saying such-and-such is better than/inferior to such-and-such-other, without taking into account our personal differences. What’s heavy to one fisherman might not be to another. A rod that”s too stiff for me might be too soft for you. How we expect us to all be the same about fly rods, given all our differences about everything else, always mystifies me.
Just my .02, worthless in any court in the land. 🙂

MemberWhat is this another weenie waving contest??? 😮 😮 😮
Why does one have to be better than the other. Sometimes I think as fly fishers we spend more time/effort on putting labels up to seperate ourselves from everyone else than actually fishing.
Appreciate them both for their qualities to fish. These are mere tools after all, though to the individual owner they do become more than that, but its not like its going to improve your personality, intelligence or attractiveness to the opposite sex. ;D
Fish ’em if you like them
Cheers
