I probably do more hunting than fishing throughout the year, actually. Spring gobbler, archery, birds, rifle, muzzleloader… just one reason why it’s great to live in western Pennsylvania. Got this old Hoss two falls ago on the last day of rifle season. As you may guess, I’m a proponent of our antler restrictions.
I’m a huge deer hunter. My dad started taking me deer hunting since before I started Kindergarten. Grew up in a dyed in the wool bow hunting family. Where I come from (central West Virginia) there are no upland birds sans about 1 grouse per square mile, a double gun is as rare as antelope in these parts. Of course, trout fishing was a rarity too, as it is about an hour to the nearest wild trout stream from where I grew up.
Anyway, times have changed, I self taught myself fly fishing in the early 90’s and the rest is history on that. My friend Lee introduced me to grouse hunting and I got addicted, bought a double gun and spend several days each year on old strip mines with Lee’s Brittany searching in vane for at least one flush. But I’ll never shake the deer woods. I’m a trophy hunter first and foremost. Since about 1998 I decided that if I wouldn’t have it mounted and put on my wall, I won’t shoot it. Still waiting on that trophy, but if you don’t let ’em go, they won’t ever grow. By the end of season, if I want meat I’ll take a doe or 10 with my blackpowder rifle. I also turkey hunt in the spring and do some rabbit hunting in the winter. I was also raised with at least a couple of good beagles in the pen at all times so we rabbit hunted a lot. I love it, but haven’t been out for cottontails in a couple of years.
I’m torn on whether to go west again next year for trout or to use that time to go bowhunt for antelope and/or mulies.
Was “born” with a gun in my hands as were my children, don’t hunt as much as I use to, last deer season I looked out the window and there were 31 whitetail in my yard/riverbottom. It takes away from the “experience”.
Wife, has a Mountain Fiest tree dog, will put him on squirrels this fall after the leaves die off, that is if he’s not to spoil to get out of her lap ;).
I was into Woodcock hunting a few years ago, had a really good setter. The dog died, blew out my left knee and I sold my 28 gauge Parker.
I’m a trapper at heart, take it by spells, some years I trap some I don’t, but when I do I really get in tune with nature, more so than with a flyrod. But angling gets most of my attention ;D Look where I’m at now.
I was a deer hunter first, and found fly fishing only through cutting class in graduate school.
I got my undergraduate degree in Kirksville, MO (home of some bruiser deer) and spentt plenty of time in the woods with a bow.
Too much fishing too little time.
I hunted as a kid, used to sell bunny rats around the neighbourhood, when I was mid teens, just to cover ammunition. We had ducks, kangaroo, rabbits a few goats to hunt back home, plus bowling over feral cats. Deer I never got into.
But I always preferred the water, hunting was just a change from fishing the salt, spear fishing, diving for lobster/crab/abalone, surfing etc
Then I discovered fly fishing LOlLike to eat deer/duck etc way more than I do trout, but wouldn’t give up fishing time to chase them
I prefer to trade services for game.Cheers

Pigs, deer and other ferals. I spent a couple of years following my father in-law shooting for animal control.
Kill and destroy missions out of choppers with no doors and with a H&K or Bennelli shotgun for goats is adrenaline plus. All in the name of flora conservation. [smiley=evil.gif]Still I prefer fishing. ::)
Funny you should mention this zach.. better check out the other post i just made! You are more than welcome at our deer camp anytime up in michigan! Actually, there is some really great fall steelheading to be had at that time of year too, and its only a few miles away from camp. All the hunters are in the woods, and the river is about empty.
And for those bow hunters that are out there, on my 3rd year of trying, i finally drew the coveted iowa bow tag! I am pumped to say the least. Just finalized the final food plot plantings with the famer out there, and i can’t wait for the first week of november.
I also do a bit of pheasant hunting, we usually try and make it out to South Dakota for a long weekend every year – zach you would love it compared to the put and take farms that it sounds like you hunt on.
Eric, congrats on the Iowa bow tag and it sounds like you are hunting on private property (good move).

I used to hunt a lot. I especially loved the bird hunting (because of the dogs working) and Spring Gobbler. I also hunted Deer, Elk, Moose and Hogs, but didn’t find it as enjoyable as the Bird hunting. I don’t get to hunt as often as I would like any more, but the fishing, kayaking, and photography fill the voids pretty well.
