I haven’t fished any graphite in a few years(bit way too deep by the fiberglass and bamboo bugs), but if you’re looking at the Winston LT’s, the 7’9″ 3 wt. is an incredible rod.
    Have fun!  Regards, Steve

Anyone cast Hardy’s new 8′ 5 wt. fiberglass rod? Read a nice review on the glass board, but am curious what others think. (Just what I need, another 5 wt!)

PS- finally got power 4 days after the ice storm here in Albany, NY, 3 nights in 3 different lousy motels with our Great Pyrenees, and my wife’s car squished by the tree that’s no longer upright in the front yard.  Fantasizing about fishing, gear, etc. has kept me going.  Coulda been worse.

My favorite is an emerger pattern similar to Scott’s nymph, but w/o the bead and tied with a paraloops style dun hackle over the thorax – sits great right in the film. I’ll tie it both with a flashier abdomen using a green flash rib, or a more subdued olive dubbed abdomen, with a very light z-lon shuck.

    Gene-
A great choice for a place to live! My wife’s from Grand Junction on the western slope, and although prices seem to have risen all over CO, the western slope is semi-arid, close to the mountains still, and with great weather.

in reply to: Do you dream about fishing? #17319

I also don’t remember too many dreams, and don’t recall any fishing dream in particular.  However, at least once or twice a year I’ll hit a hatch, and that night as I drift off to sleep I keep startling awake to the sound of that sudden nearby small splash we all know and love.  it’s a wondeful remarkable feeling for me, and can happen a bunch of times for a half hour or so. (hasn’t happened yet this year though – maybe next week or the week later when I’m taking my annual 2 and 3-day trips to the Adirondacks with my son and the my dad and brother – maybe next week I’ll have that smile on myface). : Regards, Steve

in reply to: Winston LT #17294

    Hi-
For the last two years I’ve fished glass and boo almost exclusively – however, I have the 7’9″ 3 wt. LT that is one of the finest, if not the finest graphite 3 wt. I’ve ever fished – has a wonderful combination of smoothness, finesse, yet a little backbone when you need it. From a quiver of way too many rods, it’s one of only 3 graphite rods I’ve kept. It’s a great rod.

    Bryan-
Unfortunately all my experiences fishing glass have been with the newer rods – others have a much better sense of the older glass. Certain Fenwicks sound really nice to me, and I might have to look in that direction sometime.

in reply to: Glass rod question for Cameron #16881

    Hi Bryan-
My thoughts about glass run a few directions.  For small streams I love a 7′ 3 pc. 4 wt. off a Honey Lamiglass blank that I have – I fish a lot of bamboo, but it’s so nice not to worry when you’re slipping and sliding over brush and rocks, and getting flies hung up a fair amount. I love the soft flex of a glass small stream rod. Also, however, I recently picked up a custom 8’3″ 5 wt. from Mike McFarland, and it’s an incredible rod.  I wanted a bit longer rod than the usual 8′ 5 wt. for my other main use for glass: early in the season when waters are high and I’m slinging a lot of weight/nymphs/streamers. I still love the bamboo for May-July fishing dries, but I’ve really fallen for the glass rods.  I’ve hardly picked up my graphite in a couple of years.  Go for it.
    Regards, Steve

Thanks for the welcome guys. I am looking forward to hearing more about others’ time on the water.
Cameron- I’m SAltsh on both the fiberglass and bamboo forums. Mike is supposed to ship the rod today or tomorrow, so I hope to fish it my first day out next friday. As my camera is being repaired right now I asked him to take some pictures of it so I can post them for others to see.
