MemberZach,
Two subjects I would like to see in upcoming podcasts…..
1. Maybe do a podcast on the Park and highlight some places to see/avoid when in the Smokies.
2. Do a review of a river…any river. I know focusing on TN tailwaters would regionalize things, but you could do rivers across the country. Talk about hatches, special points of interest, places to visit nearby, hairy whitewater sections if present, generation/flow scheduling and it’s effect, and general things about the river.Just some ideas….FWIW.

Memberjustfishing55,
Just curious….was this clerk from DS Flyshop? I used to live there and know those guys well.

MemberThanks for the info. I am probably going with the Sunrise. I am 235 lbs and the Sunrise supports alot more weight(700 lbs) and allows you to stand up straight on the casting platform. The longer pontoons help with mobility on the flats and the rapids.

MemberThe Creek Company looks nice, but can it handle rough water….don’t know. The Scadden is bomber and I’m leaning to buying that. Sierra Outdoors has one for sale that looks pretty good. It has 1200 denier nylon (which I think is really good) and is on sale.

The Scadden boats have an anchor line built into the frame so that the anchor line is out of the way. They seem to have put alot of thought into their boats. I’m looking at the Skykomish Sunrise ST.

MemberThis is really good stuff. May have to try this method. Got a related question. I am in the market to buy a pontoon. I have looked really hard at the Scadden toons…they are up to class IV whitewater rated and can support up to ~700 lbs. They are also $1000 and up. Some of the water I float does have an occasional class III rapid. I also like to carry alot of gear and I am not the lightest guy in the world either. Most of the pontoons I see out there don’t look in the same league as the Scadden and I’m wondering if the quality is worth the price. Scadden boats also have a casting platform that slides out from under your seat. It has a lean bar that can be brought forward to give you that drift boat comfort. Any help would be appreciated.

MemberVery nice Zach. I am getting an Optio WP this spring. Now that you recommend it, that really seals the deal. FWIW, I hear Pentax may be going out of business.

MemberIt will not open on my computer either.

MemberIf it’s out there, I own it…I really liked the TBD. They spend too much time on the Jeep breaking down, but other than that I thought it’s the best thing out there. FT was really good, just too short. The same could be said for In Search of a Rising Tide. It just is’nt enough footage to satisfy.
The best “made” fly fishing video out there imo is The Hatch. It’s wonderfully done and has a great soundtrack. Again, it’s only ten minutes…too short. Hopefully those guys will release more in the future.
Have not seen Troutgrass yet. As far as old school dorky fly videos…..Joe Humphrey’s Casting in Tight Brush and the late Gary LaFontaine’s Succesfull Fly Fishing Strategies Vol 1 and 2 are my favorites.

MemberThat looks great. I had a 95 Cruiser and sold it. One of my biggest regrets…..I love Toyota’s. As soon as I get out of my truck (GMC) it’s back to a Cruiser.

MemberWent to the one in Atlanta last weekend. It was basically the same as last year. I usually get enough out of it to warrant attending…but barely. I enjoy looking at the boats and canoes/kayaks/pontoons. I am planning on buying a Scadden poontoon and they had one at the show. The fly tying is pretty cool and I usually learn a new pattern or two. They have a guy that makes a frog out of a foam hair curler. It’s probably the best frog imitation I have seen. Floats just like one because of the inserted weights. I am planning on tying some and will take some pictures. Be sure to check it out, his name is Craig Reindeau I believe.

MemberWhat the heck is a Coca cola, Cameron Mortenson? We call it Coke down South. Good call on the Knob Creek. I recently gave up drinking beer. Here goes:
1. A good single malt scotch
2. Knob Creek, Booker’s, or Maker’s Mark
3. A little B&B in some camp coffee
4. Tuaca chilled on ice
5. A decent red wineIf it’s fall and there’s college football….gimme Maker’s or any cheap bourbon and mix it with Coke in a big ol’ 32 oz cup.

MemberI gotta ditto on what Mountainsallaround said. I have the Orvis jacket and absolutely love it. Very comfortable and simple.

MemberI think they are great! They are definitely on my want list. As far as the fish thing, I think you are dead on on how it’s better on the fish than the normal treatment/release they get. Most people that comment on them probably are basing it on blind opinion and not personal experience. Boga’s are also made in my home state, Alabama, so that a plus also.

MemberMikeA,
Where/who did you buy the kit from? I am very interested in building my first rod and that is exactly what I want.

MemberI had a friend of mine float down the Watauga on one. He came away impressed. They said that the boat handled well when they hit rocks. He said it was very nimble. The welds are guaranteed. He knows and trusts the guy. FYI……
scott s.
MemberWell said. Dr. Slick is a damn good company. I can’t say the same for Cabela’s/BassPro/insert your mega store here…..
scott s.
MemberWell depends on what Clacka model….but there looks like it is a difference of 150 lbs. Which is alot. However, I have been told they are very nimble. I would suggest you row a Clacka, Hyde, and H.I. and then decide.
scott s.
MemberCheck the weight of the Hog Island…..I have been told they are very close to the Clacka. Big misconception.
As far as not stopping on a river during generation….you are doing yourself a disservice by not devoting more time over the honey holes. Take an extra anchor and a good knife in case the worst happens and your anchor gets snagged. To each his own I guess.
scott s.
MemberMikeA, I would not want a flat back boat on most tailwaters. When you anchor they tend to fill up with water and sink…if the current is moving. Nice looking boats and it’s something that would be great on the rivers and creeks where I live.
To answer your ? Zach I have been shopping for a new boat. I am going to try a Hog Island out and then decide between it, a Clacka, and a raft. The more I hear about Hog Island the more I am intrigued/impressed.

MemberYou will have a great time. I have some friends that love fishing Hazel. I have been told Eagle and Forney creeks are the real deal. Forney is real remote from what I have been told.
