The Itinerant AnglerHey guys-
Hoping for some info on a new fishery to me.

The Itinerant AnglerHere is the map of the area:

We will be canoeing into the upper middle arm. Hazel Creek is, apparently, one of the more famous streams in the Smokies, and I have been warned that there will be a lot of anglers in there, but to be perfectly honest I think their definition of “a lot” and my tailwater-bred definition would be pretty different. For one thing it costs $35 for a party of two to have yourself shuttled over. No fishing in the Smokies is worth that much (speaking of the fishing alone).
This is going to be sweet. We will have tons of pictures from this trip.

MemberA friend of mine fished there this spring. He really wasn’t all that impressed with it just to be honest. He caught fish, but said it wasn’t worth the hype. Don’t let that get in your way, it was just his one time experience. I’ve been on several streams that my first impression was really bad, but gave them a second chance and they impressed me.

The Itinerant AnglerHey WV-
Honestly I am expecting the typical Smokies fishing.

MemberYou will have a great time. I have some friends that love fishing Hazel. I have been told Eagle and Forney creeks are the real deal. Forney is real remote from what I have been told.

Steve K.MemberZach,
Let me know if you have specific questions about Hazel Creek. I know it like the back of my hand. My first backpack/fishing trip to Hazel Creek was in the early 80’s. I’be been frequenting the stream ever since.
I’ve also fished Eagle, Forney and Noland extensively as well.
You’ll be there when the browns are migrating upstream from Fontana. I’ve caught 18 inchers way upstream of the lake in the Fall.
Let us know how it goes.

MemberZach, a few of us Psycho Fly Fishers spent Friday on Hazel Creek. We hiked a good way up.. about as far as you would like to go on a day trip and still get some fishing in.
What I remember most about it is BEARS! 😮
True story! We saw three of those critters with one being a very close encounter indeed! Pics will be flying around shortly.
As for the fishing…. yeah… it gets beat up pretty hard. There were 7 of us, all very good fishers and if you’re going for numbers this might not be the creek for you.
The water is the about as fishy looking as it gets though.
All-in-all I would have to say I’ll leave it for those who ‘own’ the creek! ;DOh yeah… I discovered that bears do not ‘scat’ in the woods! They do it on the trail instead! 😉
