MemberI mentioned above that the World Fishing Network crew to film parts of our Casting for Recovery single fly event on the Bitterroot using a drone. I recently spoke to the guide whose boat was the subject of the filming. He said he felt like he was being followed by a swarm of bees.

MemberZach, the circle hook goes around the bill/beak of the gar. It works well with spotted gar. Not sure about how it would work with the big guys, like alligator gar.
Alligator gar season has been temporarily closed on a couple of Texas rivers (e.g., Trinity River downstream from Dallas) so the gar can be protected as they spawn. They will only swarm and spawn when the rivers or lakes flood, and we have those conditions here now. Given the recent drought we haven’t seen flood stage or any alligator gar spawning in years, but reports say the big guys and girls are in spawning mode now.

MemberLater this month, I’ll be tying at Guadalupe River TU’s Troutfest in Sattler, Texas, alongside Casey Smartt, a local guide who specializes in catching gar on the fly. Casey dislikes rope flies and ties his as either standard streamer patterns or tube flies that incorporate a large circle hook. He’s got some great shots of his flies and video of catching big gar from his kayak on Canyon Lake at caseysmartt.com.

MemberI was at a single fly event on the Bitterroot in October that raised funds for Casting for Recovery. We had a crew from World Fishing Network there to cover the event and they brought along a drone. It took some amazing shots during the float that would have not have been economically feasible (and much more obtrusive) if they’d had to use a helicopter.

MemberI have one, have used it a bit. It does have a cool look to it, and it shoots well in low light, but the dials take awhile to get used to. I still prefer my D800.

MemberUsually, Texas Parks and Wildlife gets their brood stripers for their striper hatchery program from the Colorado River below Lake Livingston.

MemberBiggest fly-caught striper in Texas was a 36+ lb fish taken on a big, dark leech streamer from the Guadalupe River (in the midst of the tailwater trout fishery).

MemberI just added Lightroom 4 to my MacBook yesterday, so I am no expert, but am signed up for the class Tim suggested above and was advised by an experienced photog that the Lightroom 4 Crash Course on DVD is a good place to start.

MemberI have had great luck on stripers in Lake Texoma, most recently a couple of months ago.

MemberI sure hope my graphite rods have no memory.

MemberI’ve not tried the Supra line that Mike suggests, but would second Brian’s thoughts on the Wulff TT lines.

MemberI don’t post pictures yet, so here is a link to what my Tying Room looked like when I moved into it about five years ago:

It’s a lot fuller and messier now.

MemberThanks all. I’m lined up with Cordell Baum to fish exotics/canals right now. I’d like a shot at peacocks and to add to my fly caught species list.

MemberI am also a fan of the Whiting Bugger Packs.
