I have a McKenzie vise light that I attach to the stem of my Renzetti Traveler when on the road or doing tying demos.

I bought a used Slik carbon fiber tripod a decade ago and it has served me well.

There may also be places where a tripod is either not allowed or inconvenient.  I have had good luck with a monopod, a less expensive addition to your set of photo tools.

Gotta watch for those name changes.

Neither of my current goldens are boatworthy, and one (Barry) doesn’t even like to swim, though Rio will use any excuse to get wet, including jumping into the pool with a tennis ball because he knows Barry won’t follow him there.

The key with those kinds of bags, especially for long fishing trips, is their weight, prior to packing.

    Cole:

Can’t find a catalog or one of the recipes?

in reply to: Online shopping experience #43737

I buy most of my fly fishing and fly tying gear online, and have for years, since I prefer to shop at home vs making a long drive to a shop that probably won’t have what I need in the first place.  What drives my shopping are:

    1.  Selection — I shop most with Bob Marriott’s because they have a huge inventory.

    2.  Customer service — willingness to back order/custom order items they don’t have in stock.

    3.  Shipping — Marriott’s ships free for orders over $100.  I can’t tell you how many times I have added an item or two to my order to hit that limit.

    4.  Price — I used to do all my shopping at Feather-Craft, then realized that many of the tying items I use are available elsewhere for less.  Since I sometimes by in quantity, that difference adds up.

    5.  Pictures or detail, so I know what I am getting.  Orvis is great at this.

    6.  Honest discounting.  What really turns me off is online sites that continue to sell discontinued or outdated items at the old full price.

    7.  Site’s ease of use — nothing frustrates my shopping more than too many clicks required for each purchase, or to navigate around the site.

This year, The Fly Shop advertised that each of the patterns on the 32 pages of flies in their catalog has it’s own tying recipe on their website.

    Zach:

I grew up in the Missouri Ozarks in the 50s and 60s and heard lots of good stories about float trips, but never got to take one, so I’m glad to learn more about them.

Having listened to your podcast, I wanted to read the book on Ozark river history that Kyle mentioned.

FYI, GRTU contributed to some stream restoration on Trout Creek, in SE Minnesota that is now great water for brown trout.

in reply to: By yourself or with a partner? #43120

I fish alone most often, too, especially since much of my fishing is in the creek behind my house or other nearby waters, fished midweek when the crowds are down.

But then, if I had someone to fish with like Lauren, I’d want to pair up as well.

in reply to: Funniest thing you’ve ever seen on the river? #43113

My friend Rich and I had fished the Sol Duc and Hoh rivers for winter steelhead for three days, with no luck.  Finally, on the last afternoon, Rich hooked a nice hen of about 10 pounds on his 14 ft Spey rod.  After a rather quick fight he had her up near the shore and transferred his rod to his left hand so he could tail her with his right.  At that moment, she decided to take off, right between his legs.

So here was this guy with fly line zinging out behind him, slapping at his crotch, while he was trying to get control of his rod and fight the fish at the same time.  If you have ever tried to do anything other than cast with a Spey rod, you know they are cumbersome beasts.  Luckily, even though Rich was well into his 50s, he had been a high hurdler at Oregon State in his youth and was still in good shape, so somehow he managed to hurdle the line, turn around, and land the fish again.

Of course, that was also when I discovered that the waterproof case for my camera wasn’t really waterproof after all, so I got no pictures of the event.

in reply to: Oil Spill #43191

I got an e-mail from a local Dallas fly shop/adventure travel business yesterday that said the area their guides fish (northwest of the Mississippi Delta) has not been affected by the spill and is open for business.

I have several midweight Z-Axis rods (4-8) and find they cast very well with Rio Grand lines.
