I sure wish I could bring my dog with me on fishing trips for company but I know it’d be a disaster.  Anybody have a dog that’ll sit quietly in a boat and just enjoy the trip?

My lab mix (Noah Bear) is all over it. He would sit in my Native with me and does great on wading trips too. Looking forward to having him in the new canoe this spring. He even attends my fly casting lessons, my students can’t beleive how mellow and well behaved he is. Thats just him though.

In my experience, you are right, its usually more trouble than its worth.

My yellow lab Sandy is the best fishing dog I’ve ever been around.

I’ve had two dogs since high school. Both were great fishing dogs and went with me everywhere. It helps to take the time to just practice travelling, and staying in a confined space. I think that helps keep nervousness down, and they relax a bit more. Once they learn they go cool places and get to get out once in a while, they love to ride in a boat or canoe. It just takes time and practice. Each dog is different.

Pictured above is Roy, a buddy’s French Brittany, and Ariell, my Large Munsterlander. Ariell did her first float trip this April, and hated it. By her third float trip, she loved it, and I feel comfortable bringing her on trips with others. I’ve even had clients ask for me to bring her along on wade fishing trips! Kinda cool.

You guys with Brittanys are lucky.  I’ve had two and love them both.  But both of them would have been nervous wrecks in a canoe or a boat.  And if I were wading, off they’d go and I’d never see them again.

I think Zach has mentioned this before, but Mae is a great fishing companion.

She is great in a boat.  She’s canoed the Hooch with us too many times to count, and we took her out on a canoe trip on the Buffalo in Arkansas the first weekend we had her.

My dog Bear is hands down my favorite fishing partner. He in recent years has matured enough to be boat worthy and I really enjoy his enthusiasm. He celebrated his 8th birthday this summer.

I just adopted a new five-year old Lab who is retiring from field trial competition. We’re learning to sit in the boat, so I made her a special place. Since I rarely have two other people in the boat with me, I gave her the”second seat.”

I’ve posted to this topic before here as well, but it is a great one.  I have a Brittany who is just great on the boat.  I started putting Jo Jo on the boat at 8 1/2 weeks old and he is 3 years old now.  Clients love him.  He stays out of their way and just adds to the experience on the water.  When the motor is running he acts like a big hood ornament on the boat.  I’ve never had anybody say they wished I hadn’t brought the dog… quite the opposite.  I’ve had 3 Brittanys in the past and this one is the best I’ve ever owned.  My last one may have had a more quirky and funny “personality” , but this one is sharp and just an all around badass.  (He is great with a frisbee)

He also likes posing with clients for their grip and grins.

    as a young pup even…

and younger… learning to be the hood ornament/mascot.

He even goes on river cleanup outings in the rain… so he is tougher than most TU members…

just a good pic of him…

I posted a similar thread a while back so I won’t bog this one down with pictures. I have a chocolate lab who’s been keeping me company on the rivers for a while now. He’s 14 months old now, I got him when he was 8 months. Never thought I’d want him to be a working dog but turns out I’m going to give waterfowl hunting a shot this fall. Any of you guys have experience training an “older” dog to retrieve? Any suggestions?

I have Two actually….they sit quietly, or when i wade out, proceed to remove sticks and other structure from the bank so that when i land a fish it does not get caught up in the debris…(probably NOT why they do it, but i like to think so!) They also can do a wonderful job of clearing me out a spot to fish and keeping interlopers away!!!

as demonstrated by the 3rd photo!!

She only goes on the boat for pond trips.  Wading she does pretty well but not really a water dog.

I have taken dr jones out a few times. He usually just barks at me if I tie him to a tree or picnic table. I took him to Pulaski once and he stayed in the schoolhouse inn in Altmar. They let him in the bar in town too.

He has put his schnauzer toes in the water on the local hook n cook creek but won’t go in. Never tried him in the canoe.

Just got a drift boat (BOOOOOYA!) and put him in it while it was parked on the side of the road. He seemed to be ok with it. He blends in with the paint and is hard to see. I’m hoping to take him out for stripas once the rain stops.

I think dr jones would rather be at home on a leather sofa and watch the golfers outside than be outside.

Neither of my current goldens are boatworthy, and one (Barry) doesn’t even like to swim, though Rio will use any excuse to get wet, including jumping into the pool with a tennis ball because he knows Barry won’t follow him there.
