I, too, spent a day on the river last Thursday (the Bitterroot south of Missoula) and managed only a single whitefish (aka Down Spout Trout). We had a snow squall with 50 mph wind gusts, driving rain, and temps that never got to 40. That’s the coldest I’ve ever been on a fishing trip, and I’ve fished Alaska, the Arctic, and winter steelhead in the Northwest.
I second the idea of checking with Brad Downey. He guided me on a memorable week on the Bighorn in the mid 1990s, first week of May. The flies that worked then included:
Midge clusters, Griffith’s Gnats if the fish look up
Soft hackle sow bugs
San Juan worms
Ray Charles
Orange scuds (with and without beads)
Baetis nymphs, like Brad’s “Hackle Butt Nymphs”
Zebra midges
Disco midgesCaught several in the 30″ range one spring in St. Louis, again fishing under a tree that was dropping buds.
We have had four golden retrievers and named them all for the place where we were living when we got them.
B+W is a good Nikon substitute. I agree about not messing up a great image from a high quality lens by shooting it through a cheap filter.
I have three of the earlier, Spring Creek (non CL) versions in gold and use them primarily on my shorter bamboo rods.

Abel Super 8 or 10 on my heavier rodsI have a friend who was recently named Chairman of the Trout Unlimited Board of Trustees. He was visiting with his 87 year old mother, who wanted to know why he was going to Washington DC and he explained to her that it was to help run a meeting of the TU Board of Trustees. A short while later, he overheard her talking with his wife, telling her how proud she was that her son was active in Trout Anonymous. 🙂
