Shape of the fish and time of run. The fish in Erie are mostly London strain or Little Manistee fish in Ohio. Pennsylvania mostly gets there own strain. Which look like London strain, but they are refered to “mutt” steelhead, since they have been engineered more or less. The easiest way to tell is the body shape and the time of year of the run. Also your location matters. London’s have a deep body and small heads. Both the fish I have in the pics are Manistee fish. I will admit that it sometimes gets hard, especially when you have several strains in one system.

Skagits are a little bit easier to cast, but that is all relavent to what you are doing. For that rod I would go with a Rio 425 gr skagit or the AFS 5/6. With the skagit I would get the floating #7 skagit tip and a type 3 and type 6 15ft. sink tips for a 6wt. and maybe some T-14.
Ethics??? They don’t exist in the Great Lakes, especially with the those (many words I can use here, but I’m keeping it clean) center pinners. Got low holed 5 times today by them, not to mention had a guy wade into my swing and walk right into my D-loop.
I’m in Ohio right now fishing. Fishing has been great here, if you can nymph. I have only been fishing a few hours a day since I am hosting a trip from my shop and have been hitting fish on a regular basis. I have been fishing some of the patterns that the Steelhead Alley Outfitters guides have came up with. Check out there website http://www.steelheadalleyoutfitters.com they post reports almost daily.

I have been hearing talk about there being no more FFR for a few months now. In the grand scheme of things I guess it doesn’t matter too much. Most retailers know about the products well before the show and most get a chance to see the products line before the show.
They need to to make some in Blu-ray considering the price that they are charging for some DVDs. I know it has to do with the volume they are producing, but come on $30 for an hour long DVD. But I bet if they did they make it in Blu-ray, they would charge $50. I’m so glad I only pay wholesale on them.
That is a tough one for me because other than a couple of forums like the IA the sites I frequent the most are other shops websites to check hatch reports, the national weather service to check weather reports, and USGS to check flows. I would have to think that advertising on sites like Mid Current and places like the IA would be as good as any.

I agree completely with Joel’s response. The best way I have seen to market a product is getting in the hands of guides and shop employees. I also think a lot of people spend time on the company’s website itself. I know that I am on Rio’s, Sage’s, and Patagonia’s websites at least once a day.

When I swing for steelhead that is a common occurance. The hours and hours, if sometimes not days between a take. But when it all comes together and you get a player you forget all that time without success.
I Blanked today with the fly rod and I witnessed my friend take three coho’s with a mepps Brass No. 2 spinner here in NW Indiana.. Any one have a coho fly? 😉

But in all seriousness I usually will alter my presentation. More often then not it is something in the presentation that makes the fish not commit. Then I will change the tippet. The fly is always the last thing that I change. Presentation is always first for me.

I totally agree with Spencer. Every jackpine savage comes crawling out of there holes to “fish” for salmon. It is hard to call it fishing too. The most common method used by people that say they are fly fishing is chuck and duck. Lots of lead to get the fly down to floss the fish. The only true way to really take a salmon during that time is to strip streamers. A good day is one fish landed using streamers. Using streamers you are really looking for the one pissed off fish in a group of a hundred, not great odds. I would go after browns, and fish eggs behind the salmon. This will give you a good chance at a steelie. I would stick with going after browns or steelies. Not trying to rain on your parade, just giving you an honest opinion from someone that has also experienced it for years.
The “Holy Grail” of the Great Lakes the lake run brown. Too bad the guy killed it. Wonder if it was a Wisconsin fish, they have the largest brown stocking program in the GL’s I believe.

Glad you like your new toy. That’s a great stick too. Also can’t go wrong with the Nautilus 12DD.
For one the focus right now is for the show. They have also been busy getting the products to the reps to show to their clients.
Use them all the time. I have used them for steelhead and even carp.
