The Itinerant AnglerHey guys –
I want to pose a hypothetical and see if I can expand my awareness of the world of internet fly fishing websites even further.

Joel ThompsonMemberThat is a tough one for me because other than a couple of forums like the IA the sites I frequent the most are other shops websites to check hatch reports, the national weather service to check weather reports, and USGS to check flows. I would have to think that advertising on sites like Mid Current and places like the IA would be as good as any.

MemberZach- I think it would depend on the product.

I agree completely with Joel’s response. The best way I have seen to market a product is getting in the hands of guides and shop employees. I also think a lot of people spend time on the company’s website itself. I know that I am on Rio’s, Sage’s, and Patagonia’s websites at least once a day.

Memberjust had a thought,
what about something like “This is Fly”Oct 7, 2009 at 5:41 pm #39495
Joel ThompsonMemberI agree with Mike Exl in getting into the hands of guides and shop employees. Their is no better advertising than word of mouth. I sell a lot of gear and clothes simply because my clients see me using it. It is amazing how loyal one becomes after getting some free gear to try out and how easy it becomes to sell the stuff.
I think Grant is right on base too saying to get it in fish flicks.

MemberI spend most of my time on regional forum sites like Reel-Time, and Stripersonline.

MemberMidcurrent is a good site to advertise on IMO … I think Matt has a good point about advertising to specific audiences. Washington Fly Fishing gets a ton of steelhead guys and has good traffic, etc.
I honestly don’t think it would be to far fetched to see companies have ‘internet reps’ that were involved with online communities and answered support/warranty/info questions on various message boards. It prob would not take a TON of time and I’m guessing the PR return would be great.
I agree with the guys that said getting gear into the hands of guides, etc is always a good idea.

MemberI noticed that Simms has a facebook page.
They keep some pretty good trailers rotating through there as well.
I think Cameron hit the big 7 but nothing beats getting your gear in a video or magazine picture as a backdrop to some big wet fins

MemberI need to send Zach a beer lanyard to sample after seeing his midcurrent image of a person holding a beer can.

MemberI know its risky for the companies, and that’s why they don’t like to do it, but I think that product reviews are huge.
