Hey guys, if you were going to lay out the doe for a high end reel for your #8 and #10 weight salt rods which brand would you buy? I have been way over thinking this reel purchase. I have a couple of the ORVIS BA LA’s that are a good bang for the buck but, I really want a jam up high end reel for the BIG GAME stuff. Looking at Abel, Tibor and the Sage reels it’s hard to pic one. I have a Sage 3400d that is (I think)  about as good as it gets or at least as good as I have ever owned. Most guides that I have fished with in the salt were in Florida and Tibor rules in the gulf. A few guys I know have given Abel the nod because of the machine work but, then there is the Tibor that holds alot of world records. 😀 Help?

Own two of the older style Tibor Riptides that I use on 9-11 weights; these are the non-quick change reels.

Not much to say other than it’s bullet proof.  Owned my two for 8 years and have beat the living hell out of them.  Other than some minor scratches there’s no sign of corrosion whatsoever.  The reel is a little heavy for some but it doesn’t bother me, even when dredging deep water all day.

The biggest draw back is the price of a Tibor.  In the northeast for bass and blues it’s almost too good; you don’t need to shell out $600 for it.  Awesome for small tunas and totally worth it.  The quick change reels, I believe, push $700 so consider whether you need this much gun for what you’re targeting.

Sage reels dont come even close to comparing in the quality you’d get out of an Abel or Tibor.

You cant go wrong with either.

Bullet proof is the best way to describe Tibors.

Neal Osborn and I recently caught a fair number of tarpon that went from 140-180.

    Todd –

If money is no object, then why not go for the Abel?

I rep a few TIBORS and have never a problem. As far as weight goes both TIBOR and ABLE are heavier but also indestructible.

Salt water novice here … Curious, how Able and Tibor compare to comparable Hatch and Nautilus reels?

Just a thought, but I used to guide with a buddy that swore by the Orvis Vortex reel.

Tibor hands down. Abel’s are garbage.

    Tibor!

Preface: I’m very biased!  Reels are to me like cars are to my motor-head friends.  It matters most for saltwater and big game fishing.  I just love the sound of a Tibor when a hog blasts off my line.  I even have a Tibor on my little 3 weight fiberglass rod, it’s way overkill and I have yet to have a fish take me in to my backing.

I own Abel and Tibor reels I personally think they are equal in quality and both will last forever . Some years I go on a Tibor kick and some years like this season I am on a Abel kick . I used to fish allot of jetties in New Jersey and they can be slipperier then any trout stream I ever been on and the Tibor would

Well I suppose someone has to say Abel!!  🙂
I love the idea that my reels are customised and hand painted.
    Bullet proof.

You can’t go wrong with either though.

Just to throw a spanner in the works. Have you considered sealed drags versus cork? Another couple of cork drag reels getting good wraps are Shiltons and the Templeforks?

Take your pick from some exceptional sealed drag reels – Hatch and Mako being only a couple of options
