MemberI knew of the story behind the book when I ordered it, but I didn’t know the details of Hanno’s treatment or his outlook.

MemberI dont think that the Winston IM6 can be left out of this conversation. Or the RPLX salt water rods
I’ve been giving the Winston boron rods a rest the past couple of years and have gone back to fishing their IM6 rods, along with glass and grass rods.

MemberThere are just too many other means for spores you’d need a microscope to see to travel from watershed to watershed. Reel backing, neoprene gravel guards, neoprene booties, the soft material of the boot, net bags, even flies themselves.
Exactly.
I think on some level it’s a ploy to sell more boots.
Felt soles will be banned in Alaska when 2012 rolls around FYI.
Banned thanks to Trout Unlimited.

MemberI owned quite a few, great product. Only complaint was the drag knob from me, sold them and own a bucket full of Nautilus.
I’m with you!

MemberWhy where you scared? They were just fishing, just like you. They weren’t threatening.

MemberDidn’t Gary Howells try to build his rods to the same quality standards as Payne?

MemberUgly Sticks seem to work well for salmon and they are inexpensive.
I use spinning reels rather than baitcasters, although baitcasters are nice for fishing from a boat.
When I went out on the company boat this summer fishing for salmon with downriggers they were using St. Croix and Lamiglas rods with spinning reels.

MemberThanks guys.
M.G….yeah…the weather sucked while we were there in late July. My wife said she would have gone crazy if all those floatplane crashes had occurred while we were there.
As a side note….I have actually flown on the Branch River Air Beaver with Marco as the pilot….back in 2006. Last I checked….they still had not found that aircraft. Disappeared somewhere in Katmai N.P.
They have called off the official search, but the families have put up a reward for finding the plane, so there are probably some people still looking for it.

You really should have been drinking Alaskan beer though!!!

MemberBut to each his own; we all have to justify our own expenditures.
Justification is easy, redefine need to mean want!
This might explain why I own 14 B2t, B2x and B2mx rods.
That definitely qualifies you as a Boron Boy! 😉
But I guess if I can count my first generation Winston boron rods I too have 14. Guess that makes me a BB too! 😮

MemberIf you buy a Winston from Cabelas it will cost you $19.95 for shipping. That will eat up any $15 or $20 coupons.
I’ve got to respectfully play devil’s advocate here:
My Local Flyshop:
Winston LT5 4 weight = $695
7% sales tax = $48.65
Total = $743.65Cabelas:
Winston LT5 4 weight = $695
S&H = $19.95
Total = $714.95Savings through Cabelas = $28.70*
Of course the intangibles must be factored in such as being able to lawn cast a prototype at the shop….face-to-face advice, etc. Also add in the cost of time and gas to drive downtown to said flyshop. Now don’t get me wrong…I try to patronize the local establishment as much as anybody but that is a somewhat significant savings.
Just sayin’.
Alaska doesn’t have a state sales tax so I didn’t even think about that.

MemberThe newer Sharkskin lines also don’t have as much texture as the original lines. I fish their new streamer line I don’t feel the texture on my hands.

MemberCabelas is currently selling Sage, Loomis, and St. Croix rods.

MemberI’ve tried many different types of fly boxes but have narrowed it down to using C & F boxes for everything but articulated streamers.
