That isn’t exactly right. Cabela’s would still charge the 4% state tax (I think Georgia is 4%). I’m not sure about the local portion of sales tax. This is all contingent on the shipping address. I live in NH which has no sales tax on goods. If I buy something online and ship it to my parents or sister it gets taxed at the rates present in their states. [/quote]
Cabela’s does not have a physical presence in GA and therefore state taxes on sales to GA residents is not done. For Cabela’s to do so would kill their mail order business in GA. After all, as has been noted above, the lack of sales tax, in many instances, is the price savings.

MemberPersonally, I need more than a 10% discount (via coupon, mark-down, whatever) to convince me to order by mail or drive the 25-30 miles to my nearest– and extremely crowded– Cabelas instead of heading down to my local fly shop. The ability to touch the goods, cast rods in the park across the street, bs with the store staff, and do my small bit to keep a cool business afloat is worth paying a little more. But to each his own; we all have to justify our own expenditures.

Justification is easy, redefine need to mean want!
This might explain why I own 14 B2t, B2x and B2mx rods.

MemberIf you buy a Winston from Cabelas it will cost you $19.95 for shipping. That will eat up any $15 or $20 coupons.
I’ve got to respectfully play devil’s advocate here:
My Local Flyshop:
Winston LT5 4 weight = $695
7% sales tax = $48.65
Total = $743.65Cabelas:
Winston LT5 4 weight = $695
S&H = $19.95
Total = $714.95Savings through Cabelas = $28.70*
Of course the intangibles must be factored in such as being able to lawn cast a prototype at the shop….face-to-face advice, etc. Also add in the cost of time and gas to drive downtown to said flyshop. Now don’t get me wrong…I try to patronize the local establishment as much as anybody but that is a somewhat significant savings.
Just sayin’.
Alaska doesn’t have a state sales tax so I didn’t even think about that.

That definitely qualifies you as a Boron Boy! 😉
But I guess if I can count my first generation Winston boron rods I too have 14. Guess that makes me a BB too! 😮

Steve K.MemberMark….good point. My local shop often throws in some swag.
I guess each person’s situation dictates their line of thought. It’s a 50 mile drive in traffic to get to my fly shop….so gas and time has to figure into my purchase. I’ve never paid sales tax when ordering from Cabelas….Orvis is a different story. I stated previously that sales tax was 7% at my shop….but I may have made a mistake…I believe it’s 8% in The ATL.
With that said….when I’m close to a nice shop….and I’ve done this in MT, WY, AK, AR, NC, FL and GA…..at the very least I buy some local flies as well as some other things.
I definitely think it’s important to patronize the small shops as much as possible. Lately I’ve been trying to purchase through local shops that have mail order such as Blue Ribbon Flies and The Fly Shop.

It looks like Georgia is one of the states that leaves it up to the individual to be honest. Emphasis mine – From the GA Dept of Revenue:
A. Yes. Mail order or catalog sales delivered to a Georgia address by a vendor based in Georgia are subject to Georgia sales tax. Mail order or catalog sales delivered to a Georgia address by a vendor located outside Georgia is subject to Georgia use tax. Taxpayers are required to report and remit use tax on Form ST-3USE. The tax rate is based on the county where delivery takes place.
Not all states work this way. A lot of them take it out up front. I know no one ever claims it. I just wanted to see what the situation was as I don’t live there.
It looks like there is two Orvis retail stores in Georgia so they would fall in the physical presence category.

Steve K.MemberWell just damn. I had no idea…..I’ve been a tax dodger all these years. 😮
Now this begs another question…..if I’m charged sales tax from an Internet vendor at the time of purchase….according to GA law….I’m still responsible for paying 7% to the GA Dept. of Rev?? So I get taxed twice? Am I reading this wrong?
If a flyshop in Georgia places an order for ten Scott rods from Colorado….does Scott add tax to the flyshop order? It stands to reason if it was an “internet” order. Then the shop would have to report via Form ST3 to GA. Dept of Rev and pay their portion. Then when I walk into the shop to buy the rod….I pay sales tax. So….one rod is taxed three different times?
I’m with Dave….Ebay

I don’t think so.

MemberWe received an email at the shop today stating that Winston will now reach out and put their rods in Cabela’s across the nation. Why the hell would they do such a thing?
Back to the original question –
Answer = Money $$$What fly shops can provide that Walmart can’t is fantastic customer service. Perhaps this will bring an end to the days of cocky, arrogant, condescending, elitist, smart-ass, fly shop employees. Thank God!

Mark SchaferMemberA fly shop is no different than a bike shop, cigar shop or any other widget shop that is hyper focused on one subject. The best selection of items and the people that know them will generally be found there. Yes you are going to pay a bit more it’s either worth it to you or it’s not.

ABSO-FREAKING-LOOTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nothing worse than a fully decked out fly shop grunt that thinks they are the authority on anything fly fishing related that act like they’ve been everywhere, but in reality have only fished for palomino trout at the local project water.

Memberyour Local Fly Shops need your Business they are needed in this sport any shop in the country who carries the big brands ie: Winston,Sage,Scott,Simms,Fishpond,Rio,St Croix they are Price FIXED that means you can’t Lower or raise the price so to say they are over priced is not correct. They are the same price as Cabelas, Bass Pro. The product may be over priced but it is that way for every one. if a shop is raising thier prices above MSRP they deserve what they get and it will come around.
My local shop went away and it sucked driving 30+ miles just for a leader or tippetSep 16, 2010 at 1:50 pm #45349Zach Matthews
The Itinerant AnglerSee, I’m afraid KBilcher has a good point here.

InactiveKB and I did some chatting offline and find his point gets even more truthful as “angler knowledge” decreases.
Through no stretch of anyones imagination I am far from being an expert on fly fishing.

MemberI think it’s likely that the fixed MSRP model will officially disappear in the flyfishing industry in the near future.

Mark SchaferMemberThanks guys this has been very interesting to me I can see a few things I need to improve on. I have also learned a bit about how those not in business think. If there are other shop guys that want to share some thoughts or ideas off line I’d be willing to pitch in.
I agree with John, but I think it should be noted that not everyone pays the same price from the manufacturer.
