MemberAnother word on Gas Land…
Of course it’s one sided! The young man states his side in the opening scene of the film. Hippie parents who built a home on a tributary of the greatest wild trout fishery in the NE on several acres of land. And the water source for millions and millions of people.Karlin Bilcher
MemberNice to see the Pa boys the mix here. Howdy fella’s! Just last weekend I watched the documentary – “Gas Land”, available through Netflix. Unbelievable – a well done film.
Someone mentioned earlier that drilling was the choice of the land owner. That’s not completely true. Dick Chaney and company made it possible for gas companies (like his own – Haliburton) to get at the gas under your property even if you don’t sign off. They can access the gas under your land from outside of your land. And it doesn’t really matter anyway, if your neighbor sells out its likely that your ground water / well / creek will be poisoned even though you refused.
Dave – I think imitating Ak would be a great thing. Having lived in both states my impression is that Ak residents are way more out in front on all things fish protecting. In addition, the horse has already left the barn on this gas stuff while Pebble is largely still on the drawing board. Pebble opposition seems to be gaining strength as more and more data is collected. Hesitant Pebble politicians seem to be gaining momentum also. Senator Murkowski’s was frequently quoted regarding her thoughts on Pebble saying we need to be “very precautionary and not trade one resource (salmon) for another resource (gold / copper).” And she kicked Joe Millers ass as a write in! So yea, I think Pa imitating Ak on this one would be a good move.Karlin Bilcher
MemberI am not a photographer. I fish a lot and occasionally I carry a point and shoot deal. Obviously, right. I had a few Dolly shots on file and thought I would respond just to prime the pump.

Now lets see some real photographs…

MemberOh Boy…I can feel my dander raising… Good for you Joel!
I’ve voiced all of these same complaints about Sage, here and other places. If I could get out from under the rods I own right now, I would. Their customer service sucks. Sucks, period. No, sucks-ass might be better. That’s right, sucks-ass.

MemberI own a pair of simms riversheds and patagonia river walkers. I like them both. I wear the simms if I am doing a lot of hiking and the patagonia’s when I am not hiking a ton or when it’s real cold. The simms are studded aqua-stealth and the patagonia’s are studded felt. No question the felt provides better traction. The patagonia’s are a tad more roomy, the simms fit a little more snug.
IMO Simms tried to flex it’s market share muscles and be out in front on the aquatic invasive deal by doing away with felt. Could have been a bad move. In addition simms boots are entirely over priced – and what happened with the (5/10) “aqua-stealth” sole for one or two years then suddenly moving to the “vibram” sole and then having to pay and additional $20 for the studs and install them yourself?Karlin Bilcher
MemberSweet. Thanks. I am going to look for it locally and call TCO if needed. TCO State College is a fine outfit, Paul Weamer’s a good dude.
How about a recipe / tying steps for the Dirk Wiggler?

MemberI will say this, the most serious, hard core, dedicated, knowledgeable (whatever you want to call it) anglers I know, both inside the industry and outside the industry are NOT big internet guys.
My guess is that they could care less what everyone else is doing, saying or thinking. Or they are not big computer people in general, so it does not spill into their passionate pursuit of fly fishing.
Never the less, fly fishing is in no way immune from the rapid sweeping global shifts caused by the internet. As evidenced by this site, a whole generation of fisherman got into the sport not through their grandfather but through the internet. The question is what is the impact of this change and what does this change look like?Karlin Bilcher
MemberThe clearest example of Web impact on fishing that I am familiar with is Great Lakes steel-heading. Like fishing for all migratory fish, GL steelhead fishing is extremely conditions dependent. Rain, snow melt, water c.f.s., color, clarity and 24 hour forecast are huge factors that need to come together to create the good conditions.
Pre – Internet, we used to make “breakfast runs”. Get in the car drive 2 to 4 hours to the river, if it was a mud bath or super low and clear we would have breakfast and drive home. Now-a-days, doing internet research through USGS, local weather, airport rain gages and the like seem as much a part of the sport as tying on the right fly.
Great Lakers might remember years ago there was a site called “noodlebagger”. It costs around 20 bucks to join and provided one years membership to real-time uploads of cameras positioned around certain area rivers. You could actually look at the creek before determining your trip.Karlin Bilcher
MemberIt took me three phone calls to my buddy and fellow board member and a full afternoon at work to finally get myself set up to post pictures. I feel like I really accomplished something this week. See if these match up with your mental images…
Not the biggest but for sure the prettiest…

I’m into a nice dolly. The bears could care less…

MemberWe received an email at the shop today stating that Winston will now reach out and put their rods in Cabela’s across the nation. Why the hell would they do such a thing?
Back to the original question –
Answer = Money $$$What fly shops can provide that Walmart can’t is fantastic customer service. Perhaps this will bring an end to the days of cocky, arrogant, condescending, elitist, smart-ass, fly shop employees. Thank God!

MemberI sent an email to Sage themselves to get the real answer on this US vs. overseas question. Here is what they had to say:
“All of our rods are made in the same factory on Bainbridge Island from start to finish. We roll our own blanks from our own proprietary graphite from patterns that are cut by hand. From there, every rod is baked, finished and assembled by the same people… the same people make our Vantage to the TCX.”
There you have it, straight from the horse’s mouth. I have no affiliation with Sage, just wanted to set the record straight. As Clark said and now Sage has confirmed, they are indeed 100% American rods, start to finish.

Tim – Who was the source of the e-mail?

Member1. C & F for anything that might involve salt, boats or sofa pillow size flys, Morrell cloth foam are my work horses and lastly I’ve recently reorganized my dries by hatch into those small 6 or 8 compartment clear plastic boxes.
2. Application and Function, that’s it.
3. It all depends on the situation.
4. Waterproof around the salt. Otherwise some of my boxes are some are not. Even the waterproof boxes get wet inside and still need to be aired out.
5. My hatch specific dry boxes are see through.
Seems to me that fly box arrangements are like chest packs, I get a new great idea every couple of years, then go back to an old idea, then come up with a new idea…That’s why the bottom of my closet is full of chest packs and fly boxes.

MemberWhen you say “Sage are 100% American rods” – what does that mean?
Are you saying that every single rod that bears the name Sage is manufactured every step of the way in the good old United States of America – including the Flight and Vantage series? (and formerly the FLi series)
If you are…I believe that is misinformation.Karlin Bilcher
MemberKeith,
Moraine State Park is about an hour north of downtown. You don’t need to rent a boat if you don’t want. You can wade some sunken roadbeds and back bays and have tons of fun on 10-15 inch large mouth. Crooked Creek is also about an hour northeast, small water, and is tons of fun for 10-12 inch smallies with shots at much bigger smallies or monster challenging carp. The Yough is an awesome river, big water, if you can figure out your access options. But I thought you couldn’t drive an hour, right?
If you are interested in a bit more data, shoot me a p.m. and we can further the conversation.I currently live in Alaska but I moved here from Pittsburgh last September.
Good Luck.Kb

MemberKellly,
I was there this week – last year. It was around 70 degrees with mixed clouds and sun everyday. Mid-day the wind was hawking but when it would die down in the evenings we hunted heads which was a nice change from balloon watching.

MemberI was at the exact same place that you are about two years ago. After lots of consideration and interviews of friends, I went with the FishPond Cimmeron Wader Duffle.
Here’s Why:
It’s a one bag system. The bag goes over my shoulder, one rod strapped to the bag, perhaps a second rod in my hand, done. Everything else, lunch, bottle opener, chest pack, reels, drinks, sunscreen, change of clothes, back up boxes, tippet, thermos etc. goes inside. Waders and boots go into the bottom breathable compartment. It’s got a built in wader mat to streach out over the snow or gravel and the bag converts to a backpack if nessessary. The bag is bomb proof, I beat the hell out of it and it looks like the day I bought it. Before this system I left the house with about three bags. Now it’s just one. I am a satisfied customer. Good luck.

Is the one and only Aaron Otto behind this S.I.D. deal? I love his contributions to this site. Seems like he’s been a little sparse lately. Too bad because he’s the real deal. It’s hard core guys like him that make this site what it is.
Anyhow, thanks for posting the link, how can I get a copy sent directly to my inbox?
