  • in reply to: Tibor or Abel??? Which is Better for Creeks? #33970

Seems like it’s all been said already.  Bottom line for me – trout reels are like watches – simply fashion.  A wal-mart watch could keep great time but not look as good on your wrist.  For the boo, I’d stay away from the super light reels like the lamson, your outfit would be top heavy in your hand.  The rest is just a fashion choice… the Abel Creek with the guide finish is quite sexy.

Mike –  I am a Sharkskin fan for three reasons…
    1.  Mend-a-bility
    2.  It’s very “hydro-phobic”
    3.  It shoots like a cannon
If you are going to be striping all day, a small peice of medical tape or a band-aid fixes what can be a ligitamate problem.

Stop by International Angler and you can cast one of our demo’s.

When the dudes that climb rocks and dangle from ropes start to wear Vibram – I’ll be convinced.

    😉

I googled “Mountaineering boots” and the link below was the fist listed. Have fun working your way through the list of $200 – $400 boots and see how many do not say Vibram in description of the sole.

Google – “Rock Climbing Shoes” and see how many use Vibram…

The new stuff is just basically stickier… I just know Simms felt they could offer a better product with Vibram on board.

    Zach,

Stickier than Five-Ten Stealth rubber?  They claim (with accompanying science) to be the stickiest rubber on the planet.     This Vibram stuff must be amazing, I am looking forward to checking them out when we get them in – Mid-April.

I am curious as to the type of complaints you heard and how Vibram will be better?

    Thanks,

in reply to: Gore-Tex vs Event #32859

Well…I guess I’ve got my answer – Event is not really shaking up the angling industry.  I will re-post this question in a couple years, once Gore-Tex has been dethroned and everyone will have something to say.

Lots of good info already posted in this thread.  Warrenty is huge.  The thing that is most difficult to predict regarding the question of a start up outfit is the comittment level of the buyer – Is the sport going to “take”?

If so, spending $250 on a 4pc outfit makes sence.  Rather than wasting $100 on a cheap 2pc club first and then significantly more a few years later.

That being said, THE BEST   🙂   fly rod (taper, casting, feel in your hand, warrenty, fishing performace, etc) for $200 is the Orvis Clearwater II.  It is a rod that will not need to be replaced as the angler get’s better and better with the craft.

I am a listening ear to this debate often.  I am not certified but two  friends of mine are.  They give lessons at the shop most Saturdays.  Seems like the two biggest things behind FFF Certification are the following:
    1.  Standardizing The Language
A heated debate went on for months within FFF defining the parameters of a “curve cast” and an “airialized mend”.  These dudes love this stuff and I am glad they are the ones doing the debating.  Eventually the things they split hairs over trickles down to the general fly fishing population.  It’s just like what happens within the space program.  Tang, velcro and thousands of other scientific advancements resulting in space exploration make there way into the mainstream.
A second example:  I was taking a golf lesson from a buddy and he kept saying “you are doing one of these deals…when you should be doing a deal more like this…” – more descriptive language would have helped me learn from him.  On to point #2

    2.  Teaching
Tons of flats-rats and trout bums are killer casters!  But can they give it away?  Effective and efficient teaching is difficult.  FFF Cert. can help take a great fisherman / caster and make them a good teacher.

A separate problem is that once these guys do all of the hard work and practice necessary to become certified, they know too much information and then can become conversationally removed from the house wife who is joining her husband for a weekend trip to Andros.  Like taking a undergraduate Sociology 101 from a dude doing post-doctorate work…

    .

And as far as simms goes, we have not had any problem recently with them as far as getting product, so that is kind of confusing, but who knows.

In response to your quote – the fly shop where I work has had lot’s of trouble getting product in a timely fashion.  How about this…I need two pair of size 14 Rivershed / studded aquastealth asap.
I know that they are re-tooling the sole, however I’ve been on the floor pushing the aquastealth for months.  I’ve finally got my customer base ready to spend 189 bucks on a pair of boots that include the benefits of aquastealth.  What to do?

    Hey Timbitsscott –

Can you collect a few feathers off of that heron for me?  I know some dudes who would pay top dollar for the opportunity to twist up some salmon flys with those…
