Zach, I got about half way through my first pod cast and it has been very enjoyable. Which brings me to what I wanted to tell you. During your interview with Dave Klausmeyer you talk about the fly tying factories in Thialand a little bit and how those are run. I have become pretty good friends with Duncan Oswald who is one of the owners of Montana Fly Company and I am pretty sure I could hook you two up to do a pod cast on the fly tying factories in Thialand. I think it would be very interesting to find out more about how thing actually work there and I am sure Duncan wouldn’t mind. Let me know if you are interested and I will make it happen for you.

All right Zach, I am holding you personally responsible for something I did this weekend. That’s right I went out and purchased an I-Pod! 😮 And since the main reason I did it was so that I could listen to these blasted pod casts of yours I am holding you responsible for the purchase. Now brace yourself for questions on how to run the thing! I will try to limit those questions to every other day or so since you are a busy guy!
Looking forward to hearing some of these finally!

I think I did 50 to 70 days last summer, but most of those were guiding. I like a lot of you bought a journal this year and am keeping better track. I am a couple of weeks behind on inputs in that now too but the days are still fresh in my head so hopefully I can catch it up in the next couple of evenings.
I also end up falling into the 2-4 hour range on a lot of days. I still consider that a day myself. Let’s face it fishing in the heat of the day is futile sometimes and your better off enjoying a nice cold beer! 🙂

Patrick I was wondering if you would have a beer picture for us or not! I have seen lot of picutures over the years with big bears in fly fishing pictures from Alaska. I have to say I am a little surprised that this picture just has a little black bear and not some big Kodiak or Grizzly! 😮 I guess you will just have to work on that for us! 😉

Cameron, Great shots! I especially like the last one! Who needs a fly rod when you have the gift of being able to just jerk them out of the water by their lips! ;D Seriously it is a very cool shot!

Seafood, I have had real good luck with the Bead Head Soft Hackle Pseudo Sawyer and the soft Hackle Hares ear. These are Montana fly Co. bugs. Not sure if other companies call them something different.

Great shots Scot! But the question I have is did you catch those fish on the surface or did you have to go underneath to get them? We have some killer caddis hatches here in Western Montana and I always have better luck trailing a soft hackle behind a caddis dry when that is taking place.

Drifter there was no filter used with this shot. Just the old handy point and shoot. The best part about it was that I took little to no time in getting the shot because I really wanted to catch the fish. Better to be lucky than good sometimes. 🙂

I think it is a great post and I am glad that you shared it with everyone here at the Itinerant Angler. I personally will be more than happy to spread the word! I know how important fly fishing is to me for keeping my sanity so it must be a huge thing for these VETS!

I have had very good success with this bug on Northerns. That little spinner drives the pike wild!
The only down side in the spinner takes a beating if you get hooked up a lot.Joel
One of the things I do with my clients before we get on the river is I always check their hook set. I will make them cast to me while I am standing about twenty five feet away. When they finally put a cast right on top of me I will grab the line and wrap it around my fingers and tell them to set the hook. Even with the hardest of hook sets you would be amazed at how little pressure you feel on your fingers. This is a great way for me to coach them to the perfect set and it has been fairly affective years. I also pretend like I am a fish on the end of that line so they know how to land a fish once it is caught, but that is a whole other post! 🙂
The other thing about a hook set you want to remember is that it is all about angles in fishing. Make sure you are not set the hook in a manner that is actually pulling out of the fishes mouth.
And if you are going to use light tippet like Zach suggested I would suggest that you also use bardless hooks in already don’t. With a barbless hook the fish has a fighting chance of getting that hook out that you just tugged in there.

It was definitely a dream day! My brother in law was still shaking with excitement several hours after he caught that big boy! I talked with him this morning and he said he hasn’t been able to get the smile off his face. 😀 Just goes to prove that fly fishing is still the best therapy money can buy!

Great article Cameron! How long did it take you to tie all of those flies up? I’ve been wanting to get into tying up my own midge patterns but those tiny hooks can be intimidating!
One more question. I assume that is a picture of you in the article and I am just curious as to why you have a whistle around your neck? Fish call? 🙂
