This was easily the biggest rainbow I have ever seen anyone land!

My brother in law was right by this fish and started freaking out! I calmed him down a little and told him to catch the darn thing. I had him set up with a tandem nymph rig and the small soft hackle seemed to be the bug of choice.

As you can see by the picture Ed eventually one the battle!

Mending Machine I did not check out the Escalante River. Just ran out of time and like I said the weather was just not the nice. I have been to Goblin Valley a couple of times. Cool place! I use to make a yearly trip to Moab to moutain bike and always tried to check out a new spot in the area.

Zach, Those drawings are about two feet tall. That is a best guess as they were fairly inaccessible. There were several others that we came across but they were a lot more faint and didn’t stand out that well.

Congrats to you and Lauren on your first house! I still remember my first house purchase. I was 23 years old and the thought of being that much in debt was terrifying! The funny thing about it now as I look back on that is that I only paid $65,000 for that house and it just sold for $250,000! Kind of wish I would have kept that old house around a little longer.

Are you headed to a stream or a lake for those Brookies Zach?

in reply to: what waders? #16785

    Dave,

First off I would like to say that the gals at Simms are almost all complete fish heads! Listen to them, ask them lots of questions and you might actually learn something. They are that good!

I had the privilege of meeting with my Simms Rep yesterday and got to see some new products that are coming out this coming fall from them. They have a new boot foot wader that looks like you good go to war with! It is called the Exstream Bootfoot wader and it looks bomb proof. I got to see this wader up close and personal and it looks as durable as anything I have ever laid my hands on! The boot that is built into this wader is a Muck boot and it is rated from 40 above to 40 below zero! That should cover you for all of the months that you wear waders in Montana. Retail price on these waders will be $399.95.

I not sold on the cheap waders. I tried that game when I was a poor college student and it never worked out for me. I did the Hodgeman thing and I always got leaks after about a month of use. I HATE leaky waders!!!

Patagonia and Simms have been my waders of choice since then and I have always been pleased with their products and their warrenties.

    Loghova,

I am sure if I posted that at the “U” in Missoula I would get lots of response. Just not sure if it would be the right type of person or not. Kind of like Zachs version a little better. Thanks for the input though. It definitely put a smile on my face! 🙂

    Quote:
Back when I was a kid, before we knew we were all supposed to eat healthy and exercise, and before I knew what was in it, Spam used to be a favorite of mine.  Fried with eggs for breakfast, on a sandwich (white bread of course), or just wolfing down a chunk – – – it was good stuff.

The sick and true thing about this Buzz is you have actually made me crave some spam! Oh, that salty succulant meat with the fat jelly on top!

    My favorite was fried.

It seems like it has been months since I have had a chance to visit the site. Great to have a few hours to myself today to see what is new!

The Nature Conservancy rocks in my opinion! I have been a member for the past 15 years and have nothing but good to say about them! They have done wonders on the Blackfoot River here in Montana making sure that river frontage is kept from being over developed. Plus they have bought big ranches with the soul purpose of obtaining that ranches water right so they can give that water back to the river and change that ranch land back prairie land like it once was. I know they work very well with other organizations like Trout Unlimited and the Rocky Mountian Elk Foundation to make sure that people can enjoy the land and rivers for years to come.

I think that once they feel like a river is healthy again and the fish populations are stable they would have no problem at all with people fishing. I know for a fact on the Pine Butte Swamp preserve here in Montana they allow some hunting. I would have to believe that if they didn’t allow fishing there must be a reason for it.

in reply to: Orvis Reels? #16238

    Hey Sage1,

I use to have a yellow lab named Sage. Great name for a dog!

You won’t be disappointed with the Ross. The Cimarron or the Rhythm would be in your price range and are nice reels the you should never have to worry about. I personally have three different styles of Ross. The Gunnison, the Rhythm, and the Evolution. I love them all!

What part of Nevada are you in?

in reply to: Orvis Reels? #16236

It’s interesting to me that a guy with the name Sage1 is buying a couple of Winston rods. That said I think you will be very happy with the BIIx. I have it in the 4wt. and love it!

As for reels go Orvis would not be my first choice. I would go Ross. If you go Ross you will probably get that 25 years out them. I wouldn’t take that bet on an Orvis. That’s just me though.

    in reply to: Dvd’s on Yellowstone/Montana ? #16143

The mountain range that Dave is describing to you all is the Flint Creek Range not the Pintlars. A common mistake. The Pintlars are the next mountain range to the south and they too are an awesome place to go play. I have read before that if the Pintlars were in any other state but Montana they would be a national park. Yea, they are that nice so when Dave was telling everyone that he would go there instead of Yellowstone to fish I was in complete agreement. The Pintlars are a wilderness area while the Flint Creeks near Deer Lodge are not. That said the area that Dave talks about going (Elbow Lake) is in a proposed wilderness and is a walk in area. This whole area is truely my back yard. I own a cabin at Rock Creek Lake where you would start your hike. I have been to the top of almost every peak in the range as well as most of the lakes. Some of the lakes are way better than others for catching fish but you will have to send me a PM if you want specifics on a certain lake. I can’t tell the whole world about my special fishing spots! 😉

Dave just so you know you are not the first one to get double flats on that road. The wimpy tires you get on new cars these days just don’t quite cut it on that road! Great to have a story like that though!

in reply to: Fly shop coming together #16030

    Frank, (Silver Doc?)

    Thanks! 🙂

It is walnut which is a dark grain wood, but there has been some stain added just to make it more consistant throughout the whole shop.
