I know I have been back from vacation for about three weeks now and thought it was time to share a little about the adventures.

My wife and I headed south in hopes of getting to some sunny warm weather. We chose southern Utah for our destination as we had been down to Moab several times at this time of year and the weather was always great. Not so much this time! It rained and snowed on us every day we were down there. But we didn’t let that keep us from having a good time.

We spent a couple of nights just outside of Capital Reef at a Lodge on the Fremont River. The people there were great and they were very helpful in helping us find some spots to fish. We fished the Upper Fremont the first day. The wind was blowing between 20-30mph and it was snowing sideways at time, but we managed to get up a fairly tight canyon that gave us a little protection from the wind. We caught a ton of brown trout that day none of which were big enough for me to dig my camera out.

After Capital Reef we moved on to Escalente which was awesome! We hiked into Calf Creek falls which drops 127ft off a shear cliff. The area had a ton of pictographs and calf creek was loaded with fish! We had stopped by the local ranger station to ask them more about the hike and the fishing potential and they told us not to bother with the fishing as there was lots of brush and poison ivy all over. LIES!!!!!! I’m still kicking myself for not packing my rod along. There would have been a couple of spots it would have been like shooting fish in a barrel. Oh well, the hike was great all by it’s self.

The next day we made a very quick stop at Bryce Canyon and then on to a little creek called Mamouth Creek. It was a ton of fun to fish. Both my wife and myself probably caught over 20 fish that day. Once again nothing was that big, but it was still fun fishing.

At this point we were getting really, REALLY sick of how hard it is to get a beer in southern Utah so we decided since the weather sucked let’s head back up north. We made a big push to the North and were able to fish both the Beaverhead and the Big Hole before returning to Missoula. The Big Hole fished really well for us and the Beaverhead was so so.

Southern Utah is one of the coolest places on this earth people. If you ever get the chance to visit it I would highly recommend it! That said, make sure you bring beer with you from your home state!!!! Their micro’s are watered down and they are expensive and hard to come by! And you may want to think about bringing good coffee as well cuz it can be hard to find as well.

For some reason I can’t explain, those figures absolutely make my skin crawl.

I used to spend a ton of time int he Utah desert, and I can honestly say that Calf Creeks is a truly awesome place.

Did you check out the Escalante River?

Actually, I meant the initial pictograms of the figures.

Mending Machine I did not check out the Escalante River. Just ran out of time and like I said the weather was just not the nice. I have been to Goblin Valley a couple of times. Cool place! I use to make a yearly trip to Moab to moutain bike and always tried to check out a new spot in the area.

Zach, Those drawings are about two feet tall. That is a best guess as they were fairly inaccessible. There were several others that we came across but they were a lot more faint and didn’t stand out that well.
