From a marketing student’s perspective, this is a fascinating thread. I think you guys have made some really insightful points, points that I’d imagine the guys who designed that ad would love to hear.
In the world of outdoor sports, it ultimately comes down to aspirational marketing. We all have an image that we aspire to. Even those who claim to “march to their own drummer” are a segment that marketers can try to reach. We purchase products and services that we believe attach us to that image (at least to some degree). In his writing, Geirach isn’t big on fancy stuff or “sex appeal,” and yet he builds a pretty attractive image around that notion, as evidenced by the success of his books.
As Zach pointed out, for many of us the image is admittedly unattainable. Still, we get some enjoyment out of being tied to it in some form or fashion. As stated before in this forum, Orvis has been a master at building image appeal. If you really break it down, what AEG/Loop and Orvis are trying to do with their marketing is actually pretty similar.

As I said, conditions weren’t exactly in our favor. The Cumberland was a wash, and with the AEG show in Athens being cancelled we opted for one license and stayed in TN. We hit the Clinch, Hiwassee, and Watauga, as well as Little River and Abrams Creek inside the park. We had our best day on the Watauga and I am really looking forward to a return trip there.

While you really can’t go wrong with western trout, I think Yellowstone National Park is the most unbelievebale combination of quality fishing and scenery you could ever hope to experience. The firehole in the spring is worth the trip in and of itself, in my humble opinion. The list goes on and on. PLenty of opportunities to get off the beaten path as well. I think Zach did an essay on this subject a while back??

I’ll actually be spending most of my time in the Victor office. I am trying to find a place to live near Victor that won’t dry up all of my funds.
I assume you’re referring to Mike Dawkins? He was my foot-in-the-door as he is a Miami Alumn and was close with my current boss. Small world.

I was indeed. It was July-August, and I wonder if the time of season had a lot to do with it. Regardless, those fish were loaded with little black gilled snails.

Took a look at our raft this afternoon, and it’s not the setup I thought it was afterall. It’s an NRS frame (not sure about the model) and the captains seat does not mount on the dry box. I’m taking the raft out for some float trips in 2 weeks, I’ll take plenty of pictures of the full assembly.

I’m a marketing major at Miami University, OH. Hoping to apply that degree to the fly fishing industry. Looks like I’ll be headed out to Jackson to intern with WorldCast Anglers this summer, so I should have a good idea of whether or not I’m headed down the right path.
