Great suggestions Ben, you are certainly very well versed in flashes and such. I thought i was cool because i know how to bounce flash off a ceiling to avoid that deer in the head lights look!!
From a turkey hunters perspective on this whole thing, we are making alot of planning here with a big unknown:
I just knocked down my bird last week here in michigan, so coming from a turkey hunter… i think your going at this the wrong way. I think you need to do this in 2 takes, one being documenting what you can of the actual hunt while hunting, and then after the hunt, take your time to do the specialty shots. Maybe you can take some “getting ready” shots in the evening fading light instead of the morning?
I’ll agree with what everyone else has said, and add that number two will look good in truck a truck window where someone needs to read it at 50 mph. The other thing i will add, is that i have found when making hats, its easier to go wider than it is taller. If its embroidered, there are minimum text
First of all, don’t discount the kit lens, its not bad, as the images you have shown have proven. Your also making the right decision in spending less on a body, and more on glass. I wish someone would have told me that 5 years ago. IMO, the glass is alot more important to image quality than the body.
I have been shooting with the 24-105/f4L IS for almost the past year, and i love it. I orignally ordered both the 24-105, and the 24-70/f2.8 from amazon ( they have a good return policy, so if you can’t make up your mind just order a couple and try them out). For my shooting, i thought the IS outweighted the extra stop with the 2.8. And, if your on your feet, like someone else pointed out, the 24-70 is a HUGE lens, not the easiest to carry around.
If you like the shallow depth of field, take a look at the canon 28/1.8, (about $250 or so) and the 50/1.8 (less than $100 i think). The 50/1.8 is the best little plastic lens you will ever buy. Super sharp, small, light, and great color. Both of these lenses will give you the shallow depth of field.

For the wide stuff, the canon 10-22 is great too.
You will do great with Scmidt Outfitters, i haven’t fished with them, but Ray has been around along time and is well respected in the area. I would bet you would be floating the manistee, but maybe the lower little man. is big enough, i’m not sure. There is some great walk-in fishing in the little manistee near Irons, and the PM is a great river too, but a bit further of a drive. If you go there, stop by Baldwin Bait and Tackle, those guys are great and will hook you up with the needed info. Spend a few hours (early or late to avoid the canoe hatch) on the Flies Only section. Also check into the Pine, its a bit smaller river, with little pressure and some great fishing. Its a dang cold river, the only one i’ve seen that has made my Lab shiver.
Tim, I’ve been out a few times, medium success i guess. We’re bulding a house right now, so not alot of time left over for fishing. I’ve heard its getting better the last few days with alot of fresh fish being sited due to the recent rains we’ve had. A buddy was heading to the White today, i guess its been fishing quite well. I;ve got some pics i’ve been meaning to put up, but haven’t gotten around to it yet – maybe this afternoon.
