I forgot to mention this morning that I did have the hood and the CP filter on. It was the hood that came with the lens. Is this hood sufficient?

Yes, I was using a wide angle: 17-40 f/4 L on a sub-frame Canon. I think the CP is 77mm. So, can I assume this effect would be minimalized, if not absent, if I would have used a 70-200 f/4?Thanks for the insight Douglas,

Now that y’all have set me straight on that rod, here is another question. I also have a TFO DEer Creek 7wt. Switch rod, 11 footer. The recommended grain window for lines is 350-550. So, would the Skagit also be a good line for the Switch rod, or would something like a 13 or 14 wt. WF line work best. Same fishing situations, tailwaters and TX lakes.

I have always thought we needed to have a TX gathering, especially since most of us are from the Metro. Hopefully the Austin, Houston, and other reps. could make it.
Maybe we could all meet and float Los Brazos de Dios or meet on the Guad.

My wife is a slave to the show, even goes to “Survivor Parties.” That’s exactly what they need: two Texans w/ fly rods in hand. We would certainly be the last two. Ever notice the absence of a solid outdoorsman on those outdoor “reality” shows?

For the ponds /lakes stuff- simply cast the rod overhead with a DH stroke with a standard WF 8/9 wt SH line – or use a balanced SH rod- there is no advantage to using spey casts( I hate that term) in non moving water.

Randy–Thanks for the links. I’ll see what Rio recommends. If only they were not so proud of their lines, I could buy several for any situation. 😉

John, check this review by Darwin Wiggett on the 7D. It’s very interesting.

I truly appreciate your input, though I must be honest in saying that I do not completely comprehend it. But perhaps I can be a bit more specific as to how I use this rod: It is used primarily as a Southern Tailwater trout rod, but I do use it also in search of LMB, SMB, White Bass, etc. So, while I will chase small trout in tailwaters, I will also try for bass species, most often in still waters such as lakes and ponds. I love being able to throw fifty or sixty foot roll casts, on the off chance that I can make it happen. And you could very well be correct in that the major issue is not the line at all but likely my casting. I was just feeling that I had overlined the rod, which was confirmed by many, or that the rod was not up to what I was putting it trough, as if I were asking too much of it. So, the next logical progression was to geta new line, and if that did not work, perhaps a new rod that better suits my style and tempo.Thank you all for your input.
DustyMost of those derelicts were at one time my students. If memory serves me correctly, the attendance and pass rate for those KA retards was not even half. That is the only claim I will make. I could not control who was admitted into my classes by the registrar.
Funny thing though, Chad: Once the KA chapter was booted off campus, you guys started to go to class, and some even walked across the stage.!
Chad is one of only a few I ever had any hope for. But at least he flyfishes now. It is a start in the right direction.

Before you turn away from the Windcutter – which many people feel is a good all-around line – I’d try to see if you’re suffering from some casting defect which can be easily corrected.

You are more right than you know. I am certainly not an accomplished Spey caster. In truth, it frustrates the hell out of me. I have bought the Gawesworth/Rio DVD series, read numerous web pages, etc., but it has not stuck yet. I have been told that part of my problem is I am practicing on still water, denying myself the benefit ofChad,
I know a couple of Dallas guys whom have created their own flies. I will send them this link.
D.I bet you could fish the last one, Chad. Do you yet have any instructional books or DVDs? There are also many online how-to’s that can be very helpful.
And peacock herl has many uses. It can be used to form tails, bodies, a thorax etc. of a fly. It is a useful material.
