Very nice Rick, sounds like you need some new oars. It’s also nice to see Mr. Montgomery with a fish that requires more than one hand.
MSThat was not my fish, Mr. Schafer. The guide we dragged up from the Cumberland landed that spawned out beauty, which is more than I could have said for either of us, until I ass-hooked the steelie on the Manistee.

I was on the PM on Oct. 16th of last year. We got into them, but they were already spawned out and looking rather spent. From what we were told, I got there two weeks too late for the salmon and two weeks too early for the steelies.

D.This summer…when I head to Alaska….I’m thinking of wearing my waders and boots on the plane to save weight and space in my checked bag. I haven’t seen any rules prohibiting this 😮

I would make sure to take a tube or two of Aqua Seal and some patches if you plan on living in your waders that long!

From what I have read and heard and assuming I recall correctly, I think the film guys use to be pretty fond of Fuji Velvia 400 for outdoor use. I have no idea about scuba film though.As far as scanning, Canon and Nikon have them in some fashion or another. Or, you can find a lab online that will scan your negs then send you the files.

Thank you Jason; that means a lot coming from someone with your skills. I also appreciate your, and the others’ on this board, willingness to share and help a neophyte as he meanders through the difficulties one can encounter.
And seeing the examples y’all put up is helping a lot as well, especially in terms of composition. I have read a lot of theory on composition, but it helps me more to see examples.

Also, and not to plug a competing brand, but ever since the new Nikon D700 came out, the indoor ISO performance on those cameras has gotten ridiculous. I shot a few frames with a D700 and a 50mm f/1.4 over Christmas (granted, a great increase in cost over your system, but the color performance was astounding. At 6400ISO, still there was no noticeable noise. It was the first time I’ve ever thought that flash might indeed be unnecessary one day.

Very true Zach! Last night I did a portrait session in low-light using both the 700 and 50 1.4 and I was pleased with some of the shots taken without flash.

As mentioned, post a couple of examples so we can see. I photograph kids a lot 😉 I have not run into this type of issue when using flash. Even with ISO 200, and 1/500 at f5.6, my images come out sharp with enough light from flash. I also use a number of different diffusers and bounce the light. Your flash is more than sufficient to light the subject. What mode are you shooting in? If you are shooting in AV mode (Aperature-Priority), this could be causing a noticeable delay and causing the motion blur. I guess we will see that if you post the exif data on one of your shots.
While I appreciate the higher ISO quality at 3200+ with my camera body, I rarely need to use it, especially when combined with a nice speedlite. I am pretty sure you will be able to stick to under ISO400 when you are shooting the kidos and you will want to if you are going to be doing print enlargements for the house. This will limit the post time and the “Noise Ninja” 😀
A tip on toddlers:
I rarely shoot with a tripod. Because they move around a lot, I get down low on their level and try and see things from their perspective. It will help quite a bit.http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2534/4146276234_d29d1f7309.jpg

Those examples are awesome. Is that just one speedlite and some reflectors? And does the reflector warm the image, or is that from another source?

LOL . . . here are examples of low light event photography with the iPhone. A motley pair for sure, complete with chewing tobacco documentation.
I forgot about those shots you took. Ha! I look like I am heavily under the influence of something. We should mail some chew to DA so he can see what he is missing out on.

Your insight has been very helpful, and it has made me realize some of my mistakes. I appreciate all of your help and kind words.There is one thing that is still eluding me though: many of you commented on a higher shutter speed, which I tried to some extent. The problem was, however, that when I had the flash connected I could not go any higher than 250th. I read about this in the flash manual but do not know how to circumvent it or make adjustments otherwise. Should I remove the flash, or just bump the ISO

I threw up the latter example b/c it showed the blur I was fighting. What y’all have said re. the ISO, I think, was my culprit. I have read much re. my camera body, and I was unwilling to go past 400 ISO. (Great justification for a 7D!)
Aside from my unwillingness to go past 400, the light was no good, unless the subject was very near the sliding glass door. And DA, that first image is awesome!!! I love how the light wraps around his face, and I have tried to do so. Is that only nat. light? And I have to credit Dr. O for introducing me to wrapping light. I think I get it once in a while.
Thanks for all of this guys. I did turn on the the 2nd curtain function for the flash, but as you will see in the example below, the background gets no light. I had been using the 50 mm wide open, but decided to get some shots with less DoF. Then I tried to freeze the action with a higher shutter speed, but with the speed lite on I could go no faster than 1/250th Shutter Speed.

Hide it from the girlfriend?? It is still your $ until you say “I do”. I did the same, though in retrospect, I should have done the same more and bought every gun, rod & reel I could ever find a need for, not to mention a boat or at least a kayak. And it is a sweeeeeet reel! I am trying to find justification for one myself.

D.I have some friends that use borax, but to tell you the truth, unless you know what your doing with curing capes and other materials, I would trash it. If you do not do it correctly, you would run the risk of infecting your entire feather stock. I have seen it more than once. Either learn the proper way to deal with the recently deceased or buy.
