I picked up an ikelite housing for a canon rebel film camera this week for super cheap on ebay. I have been engulfed in the digital world as most of us have and i have a few concerns regarding this film thing.

For general outdoor and diving use, what brand and speed film do i need to get?

What process is the best to develop/convert film to a digital format

what are the limits of photo editing with digitally converted photos

I may be flying solo on this film thing, so any advice would be great

    Adam,
From what I have read and heard and assuming I recall correctly, I think the film guys use to be pretty fond of Fuji Velvia 400 for outdoor use. I have no idea about scuba film though.

As far as scanning, Canon and Nikon have them in some fashion or another. Or, you can find a lab online that will scan your negs then send you the files.

That’s awesome Adam. Make sure to use the widest lens you can as water adds a 10-15% ‘zoom’ effect and always test your housing in fresh water (sans camera) before you hit the salt. Regarding film, I’d try a 200 or 400 ISO color print film for my first couple rolls as the aqua color balance and tricky uw lighting are easier hurdles to overcome with C-41. After that I’d recommend a Provia100 or something Fujitastic like that (and E-6/ slide film) to get your blues to humm.  😀

In any case, send your rolls to north coast photographic services. They do awesome 5000+ pixel wide scans from 35mm, and @ under $15US, a bargain! They’ve scanned a bunch of my old E-6 stuff too and they really do a superb job (and no, db ain’t gettin’ a kickback either.) Check them out:
