MemberHere’s the deal: I can still read the tag numbers on a gnat’s butt at fifty yards, but I now need reading glasses on some days. Yesterday was the first time I’ve had trouble tying on a fly. It was just a 12! Talk about a mess. Anyway, I really don’t want to drop a few hundred dollars on another pair of good sunglasses. (I have to wear good ones.) I’ve heard folks talk about adhesive ‘cheaters’ that you can place on regular sunglasses.
Do any of y’all have experience with them?
Where can they be purchased?
Should I break down and buy prescription? (Gosh, I hope I don’t have to go that route.)Mar 20, 2010 at 2:40 pm #42454dan cone
MemberI never liked the stick on cheaters as they sometimes make it difficult to wade.

MemberHow old are you there Lawrence? Reason I ask, my wife did a little dance when her prediction came true when I turned 40 and suddenly I was picking up her magnifiers. She laughed. That sucked.
I have tried those wet and sticks, and they don’t. I think they are intended for non-curved lenses. I am using those that clamp on to your sunglass frames and are spring loaded – flipping up and down. I found some for less than 1/2 price in the bargain cave at Cabela’s the other day and bought them out. Yes, the are in your line of sight, but you get used to them – like shaggy eyebrows I guess. Or you can not clip them on until you need them.
Prescription sunglasses would be a huge financial loss if you lost them on the water.
OR, just move to saltwater and never tie on anything smaller than a 6 EVER AGAIN.

Allan DozierMemberYep, good old presbyopia, usually hits most of us between 40 and 45.
I plan on living forever, so far so good.

MemberI guess I’ll be the lone fan of the stick on cheaters. I’ve used them for years. First couple of times takes a little adjustment on peripheral vision, but I adjusted fine. Another trick is to trim them a bit…you don’t need them as big as they come. I ran them on Bolle Cateye lenses. Never came off (follow directions to the letter) and I could see great.

MemberYep, good old presbyopia, usually hits most of us between 40 and 45. If you are like me your near vision will become progressively worse until you can’t read your truck dashboard well. Mine continued until my distance vision was beyond infinity so I now require bifocals all the time. Put the glasses off as long as practical but wearing them supposedly doesn’t make your eyes fail faster. Use the hat brim ones for now. I recently ordered some new Costas with progressive lenses but found that modern sunglasses with a lot of base curve distort somewhat with strong prescriptions, aviator types with flatter lenses actually work better for me. When you need reading glasses you may find like I did that taking them on and off constantly gets aggravating so just get the bifocals at that point.
It probably doesn’t help the fact that during my education I probably read the word count of the average city library.

Mark SchaferMemberI had vision correction surgery 10 years ago and now I need cheaters for everything up close(I’m 47).I’ve never had a problem with the stick on type magnifiers but they can be hard to keep track of between outings. I also have a pair of polarised glasses with a standard magnifier built in but the magnified area is to large. A fly threader or knot tool with a hook eye alignment slot will help.

MemberLasik did wonders for my distance vision (still 20/20 or better after @ 10 years) but despite my tender age I find that my close up vision is failing.
I use threaders for small bugs and keep a pair of reading glasses in my shirt pocket or around my neck when tying something small.

BTW, thanks for the shipment, Abuelo.
D.I’m not going to say anything, I don’t want to spend 6 days in the DFW airport.
