MemberThats funny as hell! I just read something about black spots on the new 5D Mark II so I wonder if it will get the same treatment. Compared to the D90 its triple the price! Isn’t the top of the line Canon about 8K and its taken them a year to maybe fix the the auto focus problem. Possibly with deflation the top of the line Hasselblad will come down to 8K and you could get a real camera for your money!

MemberAll you can really do is go by the numbers. Hold your whites to 245R-245G-245B and neutral gray to about 110 or 118 RGB and textured black around 30-40 RGB. Monitors vary so much and settings on any given machine can be whacked. You might try a white balance target like the WhiBal etc to get your images dialed in to neutral.

MemberDave, interesting to see you use prime lenses! I shoot some with Nikon D2Xs and two zoom lenses and I think all the screwing around with the zoom is distracting. I’ve been thinking about putting a new outfit together and I was thinking of making it all prime lenses. I am waiting to get a test drive on the 5D MKII before I buy anything yet. I’ve been a Nikon guy for a long time and was thinking of going a 24mm,50mm and a 85mm all in f 1.4 or 1.2 if available and maybe add a 200mm f2 later. I think this would be a great selection of lenses for a full frame D3 or DX sensor camera like the D300. If I switch the same would hold true.

MemberIf you like a double taper line and you don’t have any luck getting a Selective Trout Line you mighty consider the Sage Quiet Double Taper.
I have a Sage LL 8’9″ 3 weight that I use it on and it works great.
I think the ZXL action is similar to the LL. I have a 8’5″ 4 weight ZXL and it seems a lot like the LL just a little more backbone. I use a weight forward Selective Trout Line on it in the stealthy green of course.david king

MemberOne thing you might want to consider doing is turning you camera to vertical and shooting with a longer lens and shooting a few more frames.
You could end up with a 5000X15000 or 20000 pixel image which yields a little less panoramic image with a lot more detail and a more conventional aspect ratio. Here is a link to a cool video of a guy shooting a pano. http://vimeo.com/2054117david king

MemberI hear the new Epson Fine Art Paper is really close to a gelatin silver print but I haven’t seen it yet. The darkroom was a pretty cool sanctuary where you could really spend time with your images and really get a depth of understanding that is just about impossible to replicate on the computer.
Maybe if you set aside a “dark room” with your computer printer and a well lit viewing area and some good speakers and you might be close. Add the scent of acetic acid and a running water sound track and maybe a pretty girl with long blonde hair, navy bell bottoms and a tie dyed tank top and it would 1970 all over again… far out man!

MemberFilm or as I like to call it “photograpy unplugged” is a totally different experience and I would highly suggest you give it a try just for the experience. I started in the photography business as a lab rat printing large quantities of 8X10 contact prints and it was a great way to learn photography. Fine print making is a real art and a totally different way of relating to your images. If you are going to shoot B+W film I would process and print it. You might give large format B+W photography a try! I have a 8X10 BXW film portrait I shot of my father and the quality is spectacular.
Check out APUG the Analog Photographer Users Group http://www.apug.org there are still quite a few people shooting film.david king
MemberNice! flat is good. You might consider going the other way though, using some directional light to add some drama. I did this shot on white of some extrusion dyes and the pellets they melt to extrude the parts.

MemberNeal that is one intense analogy! There are many lenses for many reason. Think of it from the standpoint of where you want to or have to place the camera?
Camera placement is the only thing that determines perspective. Focal length and lens design determines angle of view. If you put a camera in a certain spot and change the focal length of the lenses the perspective dosen’t change just the area recorded in the image. A zoom gives you more flexibility for camera placement and allows you to control the field of view that is why they were first used on movie cameras. A cinematographer really couldn’t crop a movie like you can a still image.
Prime or fixed focus lenses are great under controlled conditions such as portraits, landscapes, or extreme telephoto lenses for wildlife. The fisheye yields something like a 180 degree distorted angle because of the optics.
The lens you have gives you a excellent range of focal lengths from moderate wide angle to slight telephoto. One thing you might want to try is setting the zoom to a certain focal length and move the camera back and forth rather than zooming. Take a couple of tennis or golf balls and line them up on a table. Focus on the first one fill the frame at 20mm 30mm 40mm etc and observe the effect.david king
