Does anybody have recommendations for a good (I mean FREE) video editing software for clips in AVI format?

Try windows movie maker or if you have a mac imovie.

Hmmm… how do you feel about downloading software? Otherwise I don’t know of any free editing programs out there.
Are you on a Mac or PC? I know that imovie is supposed to be pretty easy, and does a good job, but I’ve never tried it.

I’m on a PC until I get out of the world of academia but I may try Movie Maker.

I would say try out MovieMaker and if you end up really liking video editing than buy something with a little more options.

Lee, have a look at Avid Free DV. I’m not an Avid editor so i don’t know much about the program. I do know that Avid has discontinued it, but you can probably find a copy of it somewhere online.

For a cheap solution, check out Adobe Premiere Elements. It runs around $139. I’ve used Premiere Pro quite a bit. It gets a bad wrap from people who haven’t used it, but it’s actually a pretty good editing program. I’d imagine Premiere Elements is just a scaled down version of the program.

Also take a look at jumpcut.com It is a free web based editing system.

Chad what systems do you work on? It seems like Final Cut is really chewing into Avid’s market.

It really is. I am a Final Cut editor, at home and at work. I’ve used a variety of systems on both PC and Mac, going back to Media 100 in the late 90s, early and recent versions of Premiere, Fast/Pinnacle/Avid Liquid family editors. It’s funny, I was beta testing an HD system a few years ago that was made by Pinnacle that cost $30,000. Then Avid bought them out, made it software based editing, dropped the price to $1,500, then discontinued the line all together… It’s an interesting market, and Apple is slowly taking over.
A lot of the editors I’ve talked to since moving here earlier this year have told me I should learn Avid, but turn around and say they’ve started installing Final Cut bays at their post house.
Lately I’ve been cutting a lot of DVCPro HD footage and FCP handles it great. Check out my show Midnight Rida on maniaTV.com

Does someone know how too get the best quality conversion from my DV camera too an .flv file? Now i use Pinnacle Studio 10 to get it from my camera and make it an avi and then i use Macromedia flash converter to make it an .flv but i d like too get a better result.

Here is a link to an .flv file i made.

Other solutions are also welcome.

Maybe try Sorensen Squeeze, or Compressor if you’re on a mac.
I don’t really know much about encoding for web (and I work for an internet TV company!)

I’d just upload to a site like Brightcove or Vimeo and embed their player…
