MemberThis guy must be cinematographer. I would guess he is using a Harrison & Harrison or Tiffen filter for the effect. My other guess would be a Lensbaby.

MemberI’ve always wanted a Leica but never ponied up the money yet! There is some powerful mojo going on though. Leica images have a special quality about them that I suppose has something to do with the lenses. It seems that images made with the M series camera are special in some way. I think Val Atkinson used Leicas for a while and his pictures have a rich quality that is nice. I have seen some M8 images and they are awesome. My big issue is shutter lag with point and shoot style cameras. I have a Nikon 8400 and the shutter lag drives me crazy, but I can’t carry a SLR in a pouch on my wading belt though!
Good Luck!

MemberI understand where your coming from as far as not wanting to offend a client. I have never lost a client over usage. Most of the stuff I shoot is on a day or hourly rate. Unfortunately its pretty much a buyers market. If I were shooting a large amount of editorial work I would look to ASMP for pricing standards and
business practices as a starting point.david king
MemberIf you work for a company as an employee what you shoot they own. I think the term is work for hire. Anything you shoot yourself as a independent contractor you are the author and hold all the rights to the image and you should license them carefully if you think they could have value as stock. Its hard to get usage on product shots so get a good fee upfront for the intended usage.

MemberI’ve used a PhotoMatrix Pro to combine as many as 5 or 6 exposures to capture interiors with widows etc. It works well but the only reason I used it was I didn’t have enough fill flash. For active subjects you might consider setting a under exposure factor of 2/3 to 1 stop to control the highlights and shooting raw. When you acquire the images through Photoshop or whatever you use, you can elevate your shadows then.
The main thing is to control the highlights. I have seen quite a few HDR images and they have a odd quality that I don’t quite know if I like or not but it is a interesting process that will let you compress a huge dynamic range.david king
Member2 and 5 send them all to TVA, you might make a sale!!! Nice shots.

MemberI would think a medium fast rod like a Sage SLT 8.5 or a Scott G 8.8 or Winston 8.5 WT in a 5 weight would be ideal. I’m sure Loomis T&T or St. Croix make something similar but I am familiar with these models though, and they practically cast themselves. I like the slightly shorter length because it makes the rod seem lighter in the hand and I think you can get a really good feel for whats going on with the line
david king
MemberI think the Z-Axis has a softer tip and handles shorter casts better than the XP. I think the Z-Axis will be a great all around rod for big rivers and lakes and I will probably use it for streamers and medium size poppers etc for bass. I like the full wells grip and I want to try fishing streamers on a full sink line a la Kelley Galloup. I took the rod out to a local pond and tied on a Clouser minnow and it handled the weight well.

MemberI picked up my 691 yesterday! Can’t wait to try it out, maybe later today. What line did you put on your rod? I went with the Sage Performance Taper. Sage really got it right with these rods!

MemberThe 8’9″ 5 is sweet I’ve heard that the 3 is a really nice rod. Winston make a great rod no matter what it is.

MemberIf you can catch 1 fish try a stomach pump and see what they are eating. B e careful not to injure the fish. I have a small Orvis stomach pump but I haven’t used it in a while.

MemberI have a couple go to patterns, the Prince nymph, Phesant Tail and the Red Copper John. If I don’t see anything on the water I concentrate on getting them down on the bottom. I recently attended a presentation by Jack Dennis and a former world fly fishing champion named Vladi from Poland. They use some very heavy bead headed flies and no strike indicator and really work the water with a very through Polish Nymphing technique that is some what like high sticking without an indicator and pretty much little or no flyline on the water. The primary thing to remember is to make sure your flies are getting down and ticking the bottom and to move your rod just slightly faster than the current. The fly fishing is much more demanding in Europe than here in America so they have developed this nymphing technique to catch fish. If you have a chance to see or meet Vladi go he is a great guy. I hope Jack Dennis releases the video that they showed at the University of Wyoming showing Vladi fishing. They had some excellent underwater video of trout taking the nymphs as they were presented using the Polish Nymphing technique.

MemberTake a close look at Capture NX. The U-Point Technology is very cool and you really don’t need to go into Photoshop unless you want to do cloning etc. I have been working on NEF JPEG and TIFF files in NX and it works really well. The workflow is photographer centric and for the money I think its one of the best pieces of software available. There is a full function 30 day trial available from Nikon. I spend a lot of time in Photoshop and used the Lightroom beta, by the time you add it all up the cost of both programs is nearly a Grand. I think if you are serious about Photography you pretty much have to have Photoshop but if you are looking for something that is streamlined and offers intuitive creative controls Capture NX is hard to beat. I have been working my way through a set of DVDs called Unleashing The Power Of Cature NX by Vincent Versace. I would recommend them to anyone who is trying to improve their photograhic skills. The guy shoots great pictures, check it out.

MemberI would try to bring down the highlights in the trees and lighten the little girl to draw the eye to her.
I think you could crop more of th bottom to emphasize the scale of the child in relation to the forest.
Interesting photograph!david king
MemberI would think a 1.5 or 1 stop decrease in flash output would work in contrasty conditions. Since you are using slide film bracket your exposures on important shots.
