I’m assuming zach is referring to posting pictures in the blog that are also being run in magazines… i’m surpised the editors have allowed it as much as they have so far!
If you work for a company as an employee what you shoot they own. I think the term is work for hire. Anything you shoot yourself as a independent contractor you are the author and hold all the rights to the image and you should license them carefully if you think they could have value as stock. Its hard to get usage on product shots so get a good fee upfront for the intended usage.

I understand where your coming from as far as not wanting to offend a client. I have never lost a client over usage. Most of the stuff I shoot is on a day or hourly rate. Unfortunately its pretty much a buyers market. If I were shooting a large amount of editorial work I would look to ASMP for pricing standards and
business practices as a starting point.
