David AndersonMemberNice shot Philip..
Pocket cameras have come a long way.
We have a little Canon G10 around the house for the kids to abuse and it’s amazing for both it’s toughness and it’s image quality..lol

David AndersonMemberJB, that shot of the hunter is a great mix of ambient and flash and a very clean exposure – nice one !

David AndersonMemberFor fishing stuff I love my little Gitzo GT1540T tripod and RRS micro ballhead.
The RRS stuff is very well made and the tripod very light and compact.
I also always carry a few B&W polarisers in all the sizes for the lenses.www.dsaphoto.com

I bet the guys that built that cabin had a lot of motivation to make it solid from Indians, bears and freezing to death..:)

David AndersonMemberWow Brett, that Fstop stuff does look and good thanks for the link. 🙂
I’ve been looking at a new larger camera bag / backpack for non fishing photo stuff and will have a closer look through their range.I agree with you 100% about the tick – lol
A couple years ago I even sent an email to Think Tank with a list of suggestions for what was then, and still is now, a big hole in the market.Ahhh well, something to dream about besides hooking up with a supermodel..

David AndersonMemberOh how I have agonised over water proof backpacks and generally carrying camera gear around the water. lol
I have tried many things including the Dryzone that Brett mentioned, but IMHO it’s a poor design and I ended up hating mine like a politician.
The best I had till recently was a normal Lowpro Rover pack that I lined with a lightweight drybag in case of rain.
That was a cheap option that worked well.
At the moment I’m using an Ortlieb Flight pack, witch is VERY comfortable and a perfect with the padded insert from the Rover.
That’s more expensive, but lighter, more roomy and more comfortable.
Not long after I got the flight they started making a camera specific pack – it looks good as well, but I’ve never tried one – might be a better option ?Here’s some notes from my experiences –
Waterproof zippers are a pain in the ass and need lube and cleaning to work, they’re also fairly stiff.
That said, the Ortlieb ones are better than my previous Dryzone zippers.
You can get a huge range of padded inserts in many shapes and sizes so don’t be afraid to adapt a non camera pack to your needs.
Dry bags are cheap and light and even though my pack is ‘waterproof’ I have 2 or 3 as lens bags and one for my jacket just in case.Lowepro have a new roll top dry pack that might be the goods with a padded insert – the roll appeals for it’s simplicity – but the pack is shocking yellow.
There’s a lot of similar packs on the market in other colour and sizes. The Patagonia pack looks good, but does not have a solid enough waist belt and that (in my experience) makes carrying any weight a drag after a while.
With a good waist belt you can take the weight off your hips when walking in & out and take it off your shoulders when fishing.Good luck – hope you get something thats suits.

David AndersonMemberOne issue with the process is that “internet intelligence” has evolved on this issue to the point where if a body needs more than a few points on all of a persons lenses, the body is deemed defective and Nikon warranty repair should be requested. Why perfect focus at a + or – 15 is somehow less in focus than perfect focus at + or- 2 is something of a mystery.
In my experience with Canon and now Nikon, I can say with 100% certainty that the amount of adjustment has nothing to do with lens quality.
“Internet intelligence” IMHO has a lot to answer for.. lol

David AndersonMemberSorry to be political – I find it a very interesting subject.
I will point out though, that while I was born in Australia I lived in Central Illinois until I returned here in 1984 and still have most of my family in the US.

David AndersonMemberBen, just downloaded a studio sample shot from the Fuji from dpreview and it’s a cracker !
Bugger, now I want one…lolI can tell you why a lot of photographers overlooked leica – they’re a pain to use IMHO.
I tried one years ago and came to the conclusion that removing the base plate to change film was going to slow me down.
That said, the lenses were wicked.Another mirror less worth looking at if feeling nostalgic is the Maymiya 6 rangefinder.

David AndersonMemberDave,<br> Since you threw it out there, I would love to hear your informed and specific overview on just how you would execute an effective gun control measure/application to alleviate this specific situation…….
Hard to say without being there of course, but if guns weren’t available at the point of anger would anyone have been killed ?
In Australia we have fairly tight gun control now and speaking generally most ‘river rage’ situations end in foul language and threats at their worst.
That said, we have nothing like the crowds as in the picture. In my local area shootings are VERY rare as are armed hold-ups, in Sydney there’s the odd shooting between bikers or drug dealers and some armed hold-ups, but nothing like in the US.
It seems to be an increasing problem here just the same. The answer – out of my league probably, but I will say that (IMHO) the gun did do it because without would those two men have come to murder ?
Don’t get me wrong, I like guns & hunting and I don’t think it’s possible to totally eliminate people shooting each other since most of us are dickheads at times, but since Australia tightened gun laws gun crime is WAY down.
So I guess my answer is gun control does work – it’s just hard to do.www.dsaphoto.com

If a favorite needs to be picked – for me it’s Brian being Brian – looks like a great spot.
Jay, the bokeh on your last shot is cracking BTW..

David AndersonMemberI’m just going to say this –
You can’t have everyone everywhere armed to the tits and not expect this sort of thing to happen on a regular basis.
Are all the guns really a good idea ?If you can’t have self control IMHO it’s time for some gun control.

David AndersonMemberOnce you get your arsenal rebuilt, let me know so that I can’t start talking to you about the fantastic future of mirror less camera bodies … lol
I know I know I know….
Saw a guy at the cafe the other day with a Fuji in a classic leather case and was thinking I needed one..lol
The update of the Sony full frame mirror-less without AA filter is also VERY interesting.About 100 years ago I was shooting Alice Cooper and did a side roll of cross process on a little Konica Hexar with a fixed 35 f2 lens and one of the shots ended up being a big fold-out poster in a Metal mag – the image quality was amazing.
I can see the 24mp Sony being that sort of camera.www.dsaphoto.com

David AndersonMemberThanks Ben, I’ll see if Nikon will loan me the 80-400 for a test.
Did you see that DXO tested the 200 f2 you mention and rated it as the sharpest lens ever ?
They also compare it to the 70-200 2.8 and the difference is pretty amazing.www.dsaphoto.com
A picture is thousand words that takes less than a second while a thousand words is a picture that takes a month.
David AndersonMemberBen, I had the Canon 200 F2 L and it was amazing for concerts and could be a real life saver for a quick portrait with a dud background.
I don’t know if I really need to stump up for the Nikon version, given my lack of high end work now, but I hear it’s a GREAT lens – maybe if I win the lottery !Not sure where to go in longer lenses, as I’ve very rarely used anything longer than a 200.
The idea of something like the 200-400 or the 300 f4 or even a 400 5.6 on the D7100 interests me for landscape stuff.
I did some basic travel tourism stuff for a few days for an online company recently and Nikon loaned me a 70-200 f4 and while it was awesome and very light, it lacked reach on the full frame for some of the distant landscapes and the odd bit of wildlife.Cheers.
