Zach, having just swapped camera brands I’ve been through all the lens questions myself.
For super wide (full frame) nobody can touch the Nikon 14-24 2.8 for both optical quality and build. ((IMHO))
It’s tack sharp opened up and awesome across the whole frame by f8.
The filter thing is a problem, but keep in mind that the lens is to wide to offer even coverage with a polarizer anyway.
If you REALLY need one (and are rich) it can be done with an adapter and a 105mm filter.I think the 16-35 choice is a better option for fishing for the filter thread and the new fly rod & reel you can buy with the money saved over the 14-24.
Only thing you might miss out on is sharpness in the extreme corners if shooting critical landscape shots.Another thing to consider with your new full frame is prime lenses.
I’m taking the 28 1.8, 60 macro and 105 macro with me when fishing and am very happy with the results.
The 28 doesn’t have the drama of wider lenses, but is razor sharp across the full frame and perfectly matched to a polariser – it’s also free of a lot of the distortion you get on wider lenses.
The 60 is perfect for shots of fish or things and the 105 both a great macro and portrait lens.Happy shooting..

American firms should start undercutting Chinese rip-offs with even cheaper goods from Cambodia,or wherever the slave labor market is at it’s best this week.
I bet they would take notice to copyright, trademark and IP rights then..
Anyway, everything the Chinese make including this laptop is just shit dressed as clay as far as I’m concerned..

Another thing to play with is pumping some flash from below.
Works very well on semi-translucent plexiglass or even thinner white paper backgrounds.Another thing is have a flat shooting surface and a backboard (both white) with a lot of distance between.

Tenkara USA have done a stellar job of promoting Tenkara fishing with the videos ect.
The knock off crowd are scabs on the back of that work IMHO and don’t contribute to anything other than their own greed.To hell with them.

Brett, asked Nikon for a loan of the 1.7 TC !Just realised in the post, I gifted myself the faster version of the 85’s !
I have the 1.8 in fact.
(No, not cyber boasting I swear, just an idiot !-lol)

At the time of trying all this stuff I had fishing and pack weight on the brain and thinking I would
be getting back into zooms for work stuff.I imagine a kit with both a full frame and crop body, the three 2.8 zooms and a Tele converter would cover any
event I’ve ever shot and save a lot of the panic lens changing I’ve been doing for the last few years from only using prime lenses.Anyway, one more fishing trip this month before winter shuts us down – better get the kids to school to keep the boss happy so she lets me go..

Hi Matt, I just switched back from Canon to Nikon (after 12 years) and the 7100 interests me as a
back-up body to the D800e and as a good place to park a longer lens or macro.
24 megapixels in a cropped sensor, with it’s extra depth of field would have be great for photographing flies ect.Interested to hear more of what you think of it..

I just got one of the new Simms folding knives and have been using it at work for a couple weeks now.
On the plus side, it’s VERY light, simple and looks good.
On the Negative, it didn’t hold an edge long and the blade is a little to light for slicing up an apple or avacado at lunch.
Also, the locking system seems a bit flimsy.My last work knife was a Spyderco with a half serrated blade and it was awesome.
Only problem was a bit of lint in the lock and it wouldn’t stay open under pressure.
That said, it was amazingly sharp out of the box and held it’s edge for a very long time.I think I’m going to get another Spyderco folder.

Hi sam,
My advice for new photographers is to pay attention to the details and always aim to get better quality shots – ask yourself what you could have done better even if it’s the best shot you’ve ever done – push yourself.
For example, composition is very important and the sort of thing you learn by trying different things.
Vertical,horizontal, wide angle, long lens – go hard.
The next thing (IMHO) is to get things like exposure right rather then rely on post processing or computer trickery to fix poorly executed shots.That said, it takes time and practice like anything else- enjoy !
