I don’t know about the rest of the world, but here in OZ my 7′ #3 Scott F is the near perfect rod for small streams..

I’ve seen files stuffed like that when the card is pulled while writing.
Is he aware he has to wait for the card to finnish writing data before he takes it out ?
Also, does it happen on all his cards or just one ?

I love overcast because the sun here hammers the hell out of everything from about 10am till 4pm and it’s hard to shoot in.
With a light overcast I would just bump up contrast, blacks and saturation in CS between raw and Jpeg – I also tweek the white balance up to around 6500 to fight off that dead skintone thing.
With heavy overcast it’s harder, but as others have said avoid the skys and open up exposure to keep things bright – more saturation and a white balance of 7500 will help.
One more thing – sometimes it’s good to show the conditions for what they are, it gives a sense of adventure to the photos IMO.
Here’s a sample of the kind of grey & rainy day that really makes the fish fire in New Zealand on the Tongariro river in winter.
I’ve left the sky in this to show how crappy the day is.
And this in the rain.

I agree you have a good eye.
I think the Toad is not tight enough – a little cropping can go a long way.
I really like Second Look – it’s got great feel.
Hiking in is a nice composition.
In all your shots the post production is a little over the top for my eye.

I work for a big range of clients and almost without exception they don’t like heavy post on photos – a lot just want the raws now days.

Two flashes is all you need for this stuff IMHO.
One front and one back.The separation is so you can control the lights for the background and subject.

Zach,
You can use the same roll of paper, just roll it out more.
You can get 4 foot (ish) wide rolls of white studio paper.The subject (reel size) should be around four feet in front of the background at a minimum.
Another tip would be to use silver reflectors for flies and metal things – makes them pop a bit.
Point a flash down at the fly and have silver from the bottom and front as reflectors.

Nice set-up Zach.
One suggestion – your whites on the fly and reel shots are blown out a bit IMO.
That comes from the background being to close to the product.The best way to shoot white is with separate light for the product & the background.
To do that all you need is to roll the paper out more.
I would have the background light bounced into the background so it can be set-up not to throw any light on the product – this will give you better control of the product light.
The best way to get the background light right is to test it with the product in the shot, but not lit – that way you can see when the back is too hot and bleeding into the reel.
When the white is right lighting the reel will be IMO much easier.
The way I light large white background in the studio is to fire the background light into a big white V shaped bounce that’s two door sized styrofoam boards taped together.
The inside of the V faces the background and also prevents any light from hitting the model.
(I use one on each side, but you don’t need that for a small object.)You could make the same out of a couple A4 size bits of foam board (or silver if you want more power).
Why go to all this trouble ?
The main thing is so you can still have some shadow on the product – that’s where the shape comes from.

I have the ZXL 8’6 #3 and it’s wonderful.
The action is not fast IMO and has a lot of feel, but it will still throw a longer line if needed.
The Rio Gold wf is a great line for the rod.I think it’s the best light rod Sage has ever made and if they did one in a 2 weight I would be first in line for one.

You need to keep your shutter speed high enough to work above the ambient light.

I don’t like all the paranoia & secrecy on the net – these forums need to be treated like real life where you have a name and are accountable for your actions.

But I do wish that I could get some long neoprene grave guards for wet wading here in OZ as it’s damn hot and all our snakes make rattlers look a bit safe & soft.
