David AndersonMemberI have a Gitzo carbon hiking tripod – it’s very very light and works well enough that if you shoot carefully, you get steady shots.
Unlike the last one I had, it’s light enough that I always bring it.Will do a search for the exact model.

David AndersonMemberAhh, the AE1, my first camera..
I agree totally with Chad on the NPS and the Ilford B&W films.
I always ran FP4 at 200 and shot it a bit dense for printing – it’s beautiful stuff. One I would add in color neg, assuming they still make it, is Fuji 800 – it will be good for flat light days or foul weather.
This is shot on 800 in crappy early morning light – yet it’s still pulled good color.

That’s a sad story indeed..
Annie is brilliant, certainly the top of the class in portraits. You have to ask though, how did she end up in a position of owing that kind of money and having to use her work as security on debt

David AndersonMemberย Why canon doesn’t let the MP war go, and put one of these things out at 12-14 mp with great image quality is beyond me.
Marketing. The laymen will automatically think that higher MP number means better quality. Thats why you see point and shoot cameras at 12+ MP right now. It’s a feature that the public has grabbed onto to relate to image quality.
I don’t quite agree because provided your lens is sharp enough to deal with the extra resolution, a higher pixel count will render more detail.
Obviously, more detail won’t always make your picture ‘better’, but in a lot of situations, like landscapes or a fish portrait it could add a lot to the quality.
(IMHO)It should also be noted that $1600 is pretty cheap for that level of resolution compared to even a couple years back.
The bad news for me is the trade-in on my DsIII’s just took a beating.. ๐ฎ ;D

David AndersonMemberThere’s a new firmwear update that has solved the issues on the Canon 1D and !DS cameras, though calibration still needs to be exact to get consistent results with fast lenses.
I’ve used both the 1DSIII and D3x for fishing photos and both, being such high rez, are very demanding on lenses and AF and VERY unforgiving of any operator error, most of the new sub pro models are also now high enough rez to have the same problems.
About Nikon Vs. Canon, I would say the perfect set-up IMHO would be the Canon DsIII body, with the Nikon TTL flash system and the following lenses –
Nikon 14-24
Nikon 24-70 G
Canon 70-200 F4L IS
Canon 24 1.4 L
Canon 50 1.2 L
Canon 85 1.2 L
Nikon 105 VR Macro
Any of the Canon or Nikon big prime lenses.I would consider the chip out of the D3x in the Canon body if I didn’t shoot any studio people stuff as well.. ๐

I’m getting a steel buillbar as soon as I can.
Although not a fan of the weight and increase in fuel use, I can’t afford to miss out on work if I have another hit and end up off the road.

David AndersonMemberNo Simon, they don’t expect them, and generally charge you a higher premium to cover the extra cost of accessories.. >:(
That said, the insurance guy told me he doesn’t see all that many roo strikes come through in claims.
It’s the first one I’ve hit in my 25 years of driving here and I do a lot of miles, so maybe it’s not all that common to hit them ?I’m reluctant to get a big heavy steel bar because it cuts into fuel consumption and performance due to the weight, I would also have to change the front suspension.
They get good reviews for saving damage to the truck.
Alloy bars weight less, but almost always get damaged on a hit and cost a lot more.
There’s plastic bars now as well, and they’re a lot tougher than alloy and weigh even less and cost less, but you read mixed reviews of their effectiveness.
I noticed the country area police here are using them more and more (on the same model 4×4) so maybe they’re worth a look.Another idea is to upgrade the headlights and try to avoid hitting wildlife in the first place.
Our Volvo has HID lights and they’re MUCH better than what’s on the Pajero..www.dsaphoto.com

Roo is good eating, though it’s still not common here.
I really like it in curry. Not sure about the leather, you don’t see it much- might be a bit of cultural cringe in there or something..

Yep it was a fairly large grey kangaroo, and lucky for us it wasn’t one of the big red bastards.. ๐

Sounds interesting..
Let me know if you find one, might be worth a fiddle..
