David AndersonMemberThe camera makers will need to start calling these large MP sensors “diffraction limited” and explaining what that means; otherwise, they’ll be dealing with a lot of people complaining that the edges are “soft” at even moderate ย f/#s. ย Between aberrations at the small f/#s and diffraction at the larger f/#s, there won’t be any setting at which an edge will look sharp under the scrutiny of a zoom.
They already have a lot of problems with dodgy old lens designs on full frame high MP sensors. ๐
The lens designers at the big camera companies must be screaming for mercy at every new model launch.. ๐

David AndersonMemberPersonally, I would give to much weight to on-line user reviews of photo gear, but I agree with the above post that there’s good advice on gear on this site from a lot of people who get out and use the stuff for fishing.
When I research new stuff I start at dpreview.com and also check the numbers on lenses at photozone.de
Generally, if a camera has a problem, dpreview will know about it.. ๐

David AndersonMemberThe 10-22 is a good option, though rumors suggest that there’s a couple new lenses coming soon including replacements for the existing wide angle zooms like the 16-35 and 17-40.
They may be worth waiting if for no other reason then the current models will drop in price.David, any idea when the new models are expected to be announced and/or become available? ย
The 10 million dollar question.. ๐
Obviously the tsunami/earthquake situation has held things up and it’s been a lean year so far for new stuff.
Also, a lot of the new models already announced are running late.
That said, I hear some new lens announcements will be in August – so not long to wait..A sure sign, if such a thing exists is a drop in prices on current models.

You’re computers on the other hand will suffer… ๐I doubt Nikon/Sony will be backing off from the MP war just yet given the 5DII is 21 and the 5D3 is going to be more again.
Sony are REALLY ramping up their attack on the semi-pro/weekend warrior market and IMHO they will be going 30-40+ MP’s in the new full frames.
24 MP’s will be in all the next top end point & shoots..www.dsaphoto.com

The 50 1.4 is an awesome lens, very sharp and great value.
IMHO a fast prime lens like the 50 is a must for good photography.
As a side note – I didn’t like the 50 1.4 much below f2, but by f 5.6/8 it’s as good as almost any other lens around. For a second lens you will need a wide angle and as wide as you can get for all those awesome south island views you have.

One new lens rumored is a 14-24 L series.I’ll post something if I hear anything concrete.

David AndersonMemberI’m still learning a lot with the off camera flash, and looking at some of the shots now, some seem a little overlit. ย But, when you get it right, there is definitely a different look to the images that can’t be achieved with natural light. ย
Great shots Eric and well done for steeping on the natural light !

David AndersonMemberChris, you can just use a plastic bag like posted above or get one of those roll top soft waterproof bags from the camping shop.
I always have 2 or 3 in my pack in case it pisses down and I need to cover a camera and spare lenses.
Also, you can get travel/neck wallets that are waterproof (ISH) that might fit the G11.Some of the little roll top bags also have D rings you could hook a strap to as well – I’ve used that set-up in UnZud for lugging a spare lens.
The G11 is awesome BTW.. ๐

David AndersonMemberI hear your whine David – it has been a long winter/spring ย here as well. Used to have the Fuji GSW 69011 with the 65 mm Fuji lens wicked med format rangefinder camera . Bit like a Leica that ate too many Supersized Big Macs . Must agree a digi version would be a brilliant camera.
I had the original metal 6×7 version with interchangeable lenses and it was brilliant and cheap.
What stops these sorts of cameras now is the price of th emedium format sensors – they need to take a nose dive like full frame 35mm ones have – then we might get some reasonably priced medium format one off’s like the Fuji’s..
Sigh..
Only 3 months till spring.. ๐www.dsaphoto.com

David AndersonMemberYou need a world cup rugby fix… or maybe turn that into a professional gig and another NZ fishing fix perhaps?
I could take you twiggin’
Funny how you’re sick of humping the gear and I’ve just bought my first DSLR! ๐Hey Simon, next time I get over there I’ll look you up just so I can say ‘told you so’ on the DSLR and get you to take all the photos and hump all the gear around ;D
Seriously, love to catch up for some twiggin this summer and to talk rugby if it’s not too sore a point for you.. ::) ๐

David AndersonMemberDavid, your post makes me think about Huey Lewis and The News and the song, “I want a new drug.” LOL.
Yep, it’s winter, cold, I haven’t been fishing in AGES, have too many kids and am generally bored with cameras – a new drug would help.. ;D
Actually, it’s more about this fantasy I have of fishing in my favourite small stream on a beautiful warm day WITHOUT 250 pounds of camera gear on my back just in case a great photo presents itself.. ::)
Last, I will add, my DSIII’s are now almost as old as I am and the tsunami in Japan has stuffed up the production of any new models anytime soon.

David AndersonMemberI can’t help you with much info about wither camera, but I will add a couple points to the above.
1. newer is (IMHO) better when it comes to DSLR’s because they get faster processing with each generation and generally better menu set-ups & functionality.
2. The plasticky thing is good and bad in that it saves weight to have a light camera, but always feels less substantial in the hand.
It wouldn’t make much difference to weather sealing and again, both would be better than you might think in the rain & dust.dpreview.com

David AndersonMemberI like the small size of some of the gear and have thought that having to carry less weight on the river, yet still have interchangeable lenses would be a good thing.
From what I’ve read, some of the lenses are very good as well. Then again, a really good compact weighs even less and the zooms are pretty good these days.
I guess if I had the budget to get some of the good prime 4/3’s lenses it would be worth while, but if I was just sticking to a zoom, it might be spending much more to only get a little.
I read dpreview.com for tests on this sort of stuff – it might help you as well.

David AndersonMemberHi Peter, check out LLBean – they have a small bag called a ‘guide bag’ thats for travel and it costs a lot less than fishing specific gear.
I have a similar one from Columbia that’s enough for a couple boxes and extras – it’s what I use when I don’t want to carry much. They make some fly fishing stuff that looks pretty good as well.
Also, I’ve seen the Orvis sling pack on sale a couple of places on-line and it looks ok, though I’ve never seen one in the flesh.
