So I have been looking into buying a new pack, and I personally prefer sling packs due to the fact that I like to take as little as possible. I generally dont like chest packs because I just dont, no real good reason other than I think they look funny.

Any good suggestions on what y’all use?

    Thanks,
    Peter

William Joseph ‘Surge” all the way!

That Zip-No system is the $hit! This bad boy’s not too big and includes a neck strap so it can be worn/suspended over the shoulder…Genius!

Great site with good photos too…. 😎 ::)

Seriously, I’ve shot a lot of outdoor gear (including, yes, all the WJ products), but, objectively, this magnet pack idea is on of those developments up there with Gore Tex, aluminum tent poles, fire, the wheel! Huge!

I agree both products are really cool, just not worth it. There is just too much other cool stuff to spend that much money on. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to have one of either but when you run on the college budget, well it kind of puts things like that into perspective. For the cost of either pack I can drive 4 hours and camp for the weekend in a national forest, fish either the flats or the foot hills, and still have money left over.

I guess I am looking for the low budget solution. Thanks though.

    Peter…what is your budget?

Well to be honest my budget is pretty small. I’m not complaining, I live a good life and have a good job, but I try to spend as little as possible. I was just hoping that some of y’all might have stumbled on a price concience product that works well.

I had been considering a double haul from Patagonia but like I said I would rather spend that money on other stuff, like trips. The recycled wader bag is pretty cool though.

After finally finishing school, I upgraded to a Fishpond pack, but I can sympathize with getting a pack on a tight budget.

For my most of my college and grad school years (after abandoning the vest completely), I used either a Lowe Alpine hip pack (trout fishing or small stream/pond warmwater fishing) that I picked up on Sierra Trading post for about $20 or, for more serious warmwater fishing and for saltwater, an LL Bean backpack (the small book bag they have- $18- though it looks like the price went up to $28, I think they have sales, plus you can look used).  While neither at intended for fishing like the packs above, the price is right and they work well (it’s great to havea  built in fly tray, but it’s just a luxury).

The LL Bean pack is nice (I still use this, though I could stand to get a new one) because it is light weight and packs small when empty, doesnt’ have any padding in the back and so dries quickly, and you can swing it under your arm so you don’t have to take it completely off to get stuff out while on the water.  The backpack also has the advantages of being high so you can wade deeper than with a hip pack and works better with a stripping basket than does a hip pack.  There is also no buckle at your waist to tangle flyline on, like there is with a hip pack.

I think I’ve also seen decent hip packs at Target for about $20.

I think youre right and I will be looking outside the industry for the solution to my tackle whoas. So keep the ideas coming! I appreciate all of them.

Hi Peter, check out LLBean – they have a small bag called a ‘guide bag’ thats for travel and it costs a lot less than fishing specific gear.
I have a similar one from Columbia that’s enough for a couple boxes and extras – it’s what I use when I don’t want to carry much.

They make some fly fishing stuff that looks pretty good as well.

Also, I’ve seen the Orvis sling pack on sale a couple of places on-line and it looks ok, though I’ve never seen one in the flesh.

As a fellow college student I can empathize… I just picked up this pack at the beginning of the summer: http://www.rei.com/product/778452

At $29.50 it has everything I really need in a pack. Room a couple for boxes, some organizational type features for leaders, tippet, thermometer ect.

Most of the streams I fish are less than waist deep so it works fine for me probably 95% of the time. Thus far it has been very functional.

Depending on how much stuff you plan on packing with you at a time, for 12 bucks there’s this : http://cgi.ebay.com/Allen-Compact-CHEST-PACK-10221-Fly-Trout-Fishing-/380252597618?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5888d22d72

i bought one about 2 years ago. I can fit 2 small boxes, or one large box in the main body. In the front pocket i fit tippet and maybe some floatant, etc. In the front small zip pocket i put indicators. There’s a zip pocket on the very back too where i could put my license, leaders, and/or trash i’d pick up (mostly fishing line tangles). I attached clippers and stuff on the neck strap.

I always put the neck strap over my shoulder. More comfortable and keeps it out of the way. the neck strap is detachable so if you didn’t want it, you could take it off.

It’s not very large by any means, but for the money and for what i used it for, it worked nicely.  Good luck!
