MemberNice fish!!!

MemberNo doubt about it being fantastic .. I like the integrated video also. I went back and listened to the O’Keefe podcast. I sure puts a nice perspective on the magazine and all of his images. Wow, what a traveled and interesting guy … With years of archived photos to choose from.

MemberBeautiful colors! Not like those tan sandy looking things they have in the hills above my place!

MemberI dig them! Nice sharp stuff … So, take anything I say as simple opinion. I have a long way to go myself, but these are some of the things that I would think about if i were commissioned to shoot them.
#1 Jumps out at me … I like all of the lure shots … I’d correct the horizon line and crop the edge of the glass almost out. Id play with the highlight in PS and see if it looked better with it toned down.
#2 Personally, I find the reflections distracting.
#3 Cool shot. I like the reflections. I might set it (lure) upright and push the whole shot back away from the edge of the glass.
#4 I’d also try some very tight shots to get the mechanics, colors, and reflections in a little closer…
#5 again I’d push it away from the edge of the glass.
#6 I like the perspective and I don’t care for the white clothing on the left.
#7 Cool to see everything together.. I’d also try this wide shot level with the shelf
I don’t know if a fisheye is to cliche or not … but I might try renting a fisheye for the shoot to see if you come up with anything cool. I have taken some (what I think are) cool closeup shots with my fisheye.
I might also try some colored surfaces under the glass to compliment the lures or reels your shooting. You might even get something nice with textured and/or reflective surfaces.
I’d play with some macros of the lures.
I know you’ve prob gone looking for inspiration… but a little more cant hurt, right?

MemberCool shots! I like them all , but #1, #5, and #8 jump out at me. I like #1! I’d be way happy if I took this shot! It looks very ‘natural’!

MemberLooks like a good trip .. Those rocks look seriously slippery!
Corey Kruitbosch
MemberNice pics! Those brookies are pretty fish. Looks like you had a great trip .. What a seriously beautiful place!

MemberGreat stuff, I really like the shot! It has a very delicate feel. The softness of the hackle in contrast to the silhouette is very nice! The only thing I find distracting is that the angle and strength of the shadow seems to almost form a ‘loop’ with the barb of the fly… but thats just me looking for something to critique in the context of the message board here.

MemberI really like the concept of these photos! I agree with Aaron about the tones being a bit to similar, it seems to be competing with the fly.
Corey Kruitbosch
MemberI also use the Simms roll top .. Pretty nice. Its not 100% WP. So, a complete dunk will let some water in, but not to bad.
Corey Kruitbosch
MemberCongrats Aaron! I had intended to send in my sub for swff a couple of weeks ago and have not gotten around to it! Looks like I’ll be watching the news stand to read your article! Cant wait!

MemberI really like the shot and concept. It stands out from many other fly shots I have seen. Already been said, but … It doesn’t feel like the fly is the star of the show and is competing with the background (crop and color). The red seems a little much for me. Maybe a muted yellow or orange would work better?

MemberThanks for sharing … Looks like you guys had a great time! Cool shots .. Those are some stellar looking fish, the rainbows were stunning! The scenery was fantastic!

MemberJohn: The Tri Basin Divide is at top of the Colorado River basin, the Great Basin, or the Columbia River Basin. From there the Smiths Fork flows down south west into the Bear river (Bonniville cutts), Labarge Creek flows south to the Green River (Colorado cutts), and the Greys flows northwest to the Snake (SR Cutts). Here is a link on google maps to the tri basin divide ( http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=Lu3&pwst=1&resnum=0&q=wyoming+tri+basin+divide&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&resnum=1&ct=title ). I have been going to the area for close to 25 years and was lucky enough to have fly fished here with both my father and grand father. Its a truly amazing place with tons and tons of water to explore.
Here is a shot from fairly close to the top of the Greys. This is the highest I have fished. So far …

Jay: I fished with a 8′ 4wt and my buddy fished his 7’6″ 3wt. I have a 1wt being built by a local rod maker, but it looks like it will be a toy for next year. Which is ok, because I’d have to buy a reel and line to go with it. lol.
Darrin: Thanks! For me, that fish was the best of the entire trip! A stunner!
