Ben CochranMemberThis too is going to be full page with the text (50% gray) at the top. The requirements are that I have to shoot a side profile with as much detail on the entire fly as possible. They will all be converted to CMYK so, I am staying away from PS and post edit as much as possible, in this one I did remove the straw support. The fly must stand out and other than that, I have as mush creative freedom as I like, LOL just as long as the fly stands out. I have already shot over 500 other images with the flat fill backgrounds but want to do something completely different on these full page spreads.
I have to use these fly’s and cannot rety better looking fly’s, the reason is a very good one but I am not at liberty to discus why yet, I will explain it later though.

Any thoughts or things that I may have missed in this? Again, thanks for taking the time and for the extra eye’s.
(Damnedest thing, post a picture and see problems with it right after posting and have to reshoot and post it again. Am I the only one that shoots this way? LOL)

MemberThe concept is visually pleasing to me.

David AndersonMemberIt’s different for a fly shot, that’s for sure.
To be honest though, I can’t tell if I like it or not – it’s well shot and creative, but is it a good shot of the fly ?The mood is there and as posted above you can sort of imagine the fly working through some cover.
Maybe you’re pushing the envelope and I’m dragging the chain.. 😀

A picture is thousand words that takes less than a second while a thousand words is a picture that takes a month.

MemberI really like the concept of these photos! I agree with Aaron about the tones being a bit to similar, it seems to be competing with the fly.

Ben CochranMemberThanks again guy’s. I don’t write the look or feel that I am going for, as the creative thoughts commingled with imagining the shots will convolute

MemberPerhaps what confuses me most about the shot, Ben, is the fly appears to be floating in mid-air with no association to the wood in the backdrop. What am I suppose to be looking at? A floating fly or a piece of beautiful wood?
I’d rather see it stuck in the wood :-). Just my two cents.

MemberIt is a very good shot and I can’t do better.

Ben CochranMemberThanks Scott and Aaron, you both hit the nail on the head for me. I like the wood but you are right that it is to simple and does not work its way into justifying itself into the composition. I have some new ideas that I think I will be happier with now. I will need to use more small strobes and ordered them today so, hopefully I can get back on this by sometime Wed.
Thanks again everyone, for the opinions, eyes and help!!

Chad SimcoxMemberVery cool shot, I like it. The only nit picking input I would have is for a shallower DOF. Just to isolate the fly a bit. It’s fine how it is now though. And the fly looks a bit flat from the lighting. It may actually be a lack of contrasting colors in the fly pattern that is making it appear that way to me.
Once again, a great fly shot!http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Ben CochranMemberThanks again for the extra eye’s and critiques. This is the new direction that I am headed in. Still needs a bit of work but I have to be careful and consider the text on the top section and keep the final print balanced. I know that it is not a great looking fly but it will make sense later. 🙂

MemberThe second one is much, much stronger!

Ben CochranMemberThanks Aaron O, yes the yellow is a bit tweaked, as the flash will wash out the saturation some but the lighting/shading is 100% out of camera. The green is more to the original though, I bounced the background with a green shaded gel :).
Thanks Aaron C. Yes that was aquarian rock LOL I thought of underwater but I have a good sized investment tied up in all of these hot shoe strobes and just don’t want to take the chance on them. I will be swinging in a new direction on the next few and hopefully I can get some good shots on the route. 🙂
Thanks Eric, I was actually starting to think that same thing but I wanted to stay with something a bit different and try to stay true with out-of-camera as opposed to the customary PSed process. Funny as the thing that made the difference to using all of these strobes was, adding 2 more LOL Total of 5 grids on the fly, one diffused to balance the background shadow and one gel/bounced off of a black foam core for  slight fill. Yep, I know this is excessive @ 7 hotshoe strobes but bounce cards and reflectors would not come close to giving me the same look.
Now all I need to do is take out a small loan for all of these darned dead batteries LOL

Just had to say that this second image is so much better than the first – I’m surprised.
The first was too flat – this pops really nicely, and your eye isn’t drawn away to superfluous elements in the background that have nothing to add to the story being told.
Really, really nice work Ben.

MemberThis is good stuff, I was getting a little more serious about fly photography and then had several set backs, mostly broken lenses and hurricanes, but these are inspiring.
Sep 11, 2008 at 5:11 am #64684
Ben CochranMemberThanks Kendal and Carter, now I just have to get the right configuration on this next one and yes, I will repost that one in with the other thread.
WOW! Carter, I hate to hear about your set backs. Hope that everything and everyone is fine with the hurricane damages, as well. I really hope that you can get back into your photography soon, would love to see you posting them and enjoying your photography :).
