Be careful off resort in Mexico.  It isn’t the best place to go venturing around.

It’s amazing how the “safety” has changed over the last 10 years.  There was a time we’d take the public bus to venture south of Playa del Carmen or the public ferry to Isla Majares.  Now we rarley leave the resort.  Kids may have something to do with how adventurous we are now too and how we’ve probably become more risk adverse.

I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news, but I wouldn’t waste my money again fly fishing near cancun.  I’ve gone twice now on day trips to the north end of cancun, and while it looks like decent water, the fishing has been very poor.  The 2 trips I did have luck on were fishing way to the south in the ascension bay area – but, that is a hike if you are staying near cancun.  If you are staying further south near Playa Del Carmen or Tulum, its a much shorter drive.  If you’re closer to Cancun proper, check out the deep sea charters.  We took a chance and booked thru our resort because we heard the sailfish were in, and sure enough, went out and hooked 6 of them in one morning, then hit some reefs on the way back.  I would do that again before fly fishing that area.  Let me know if you have any other questions, I’ll try and help.

Thanks for the advice.  I’m not 100% sure we’re going to try to fish when there, but wanted to see if there were viable options.  I won’t have time to venture out, so it would be something in Cancun proper.  Thanks to everyone for the advice.

Ok, was able to go to a local fly shop yesterday to get a first look at both the Chrome and the Metalhead although they didn’t have my size in the Chrome.

I wanted to pass along that one thing I really like about the site is the feedback on various products (no matter how obscure).  Cliff’s Top Shelf was on my Christmas list this year after seeing it on-line and then reading old reviews on this board.  

I can’t believe how much easier life is with this $12.95 piece of wood, foam and mangetic sheeting.  I’m relatively new to tying, but most of my flies are 18-24 range and this thing is crazy-awesome at keeping me off my hands-and-knees looking for hooks on the floor.

Brad talking about “Countertop Cosmetics” really got me thinking about how much of what we buy is realted to looks, even over function.

Juan, thanks!  Yeah, this was was up in the Canyon.  The spinner action was fantastic but they were picky.  They refused anything over a 22 and anything floating high on the water.

I’ll definately try your recommendations.  How do like to fish them?  As a dropper, trailing a weighted nymph or another way?

Agreed.  It is a fun hatch (spinner fall) to fish, especially since the flies are so small and the feeding is so prolific.  It can be frustrating at times if you’re the only fly the fish aren’t taking.

My wife and kids bought me the Wright & McGill Yellowstone bag for Father’s Day (after some hints).  It’s roughly the same size as the Fishpond Cimarron and cost $110 less.  It actually looks eerily similar to the Cimarron although Fishpond definatley gets big style points.  

Quality seems to be good, especially for the price (~$59).  I like the large teeth zippers (problem with my old Sage bag) and it has plenty of zippered storage areas inside and out.  

I haven’t loaded it with all of my winter gear, when I have my summer stuff loaded into it there is plenty of room.  This includes my fishing pack and it will zip with my net in it (another problem with my old Sage bag).  I also like it has two rod tube holders.

I agree the two syllable names sound much better, especially those ending with a vowel.

I had the chance to watch Rick tie for about 2 1/2 hours a couple of weeks ago (at an event I believe Juan helped set up).  I agree that the book is amazing, but listening to Rick as a storyteller during the demo was even better.  

He did mention that the first run of their book is now sold out.
