Do any of you have experience with Orvis hooks?  I will be tying mostly size 16 – 24.

I assume Tiemco and Daiichi would be preferred if all things were equal.  I have recently started tying and have an Orvis Gift Card.  The gift card, coupled with their seasonal coupons coming out, would stretch my $$ a lot further.

I would appreciate any thoughts on their quality and your experience with them.

    Thanks in advance!

I’ve tied on Orvis hooks and have no complaints.

I’ve tied about 1200 flies in the last two months on orvis hooks mostly in the sizes you’re talking about.

    BT,

I use them some and have no complaints.  The model I use is the Big Eye hook and I believe it is the same hook as the Daiichi hook.  I think that is what the Orvis hooks are but not 100% sure. Sure looks like it though.

I have used them on my fresh water patterns, and I have no complaints.

I’ve tied with them for years and use them on custom fly orders with no issues.

I too thought Orvis got their hooks from Daiichi.

I am about 90% confident that Daiichi makes hooks for Orvis.  A while back I made a hook comparison chart which is attached below.  PM me if you want an original copy.  I use Orvis hooks plenty for fresh water flies (not that their saltwater line is inferior per se, I am just superstitious about my preferred saltwater hook brands).

I had a very favorable view of Orvis branding strategy, but it sure didn’t hold true when I bought the fly drying wheel.  Fortunately, they took it back.
