Does anyone have experience with fly fishing near Cancun, Mexico?

A few years ago I rented a Jeep in Cancun and drove down to Punta Allen.
If you can get in touch with the “mermaid lady” she can hook you up with a good guide for cheap.
I don’t have the contact info anymore but if you can call the bar or anyone else in Punta they will know her.
Watch the speed limits on the drive down,  the policia like those Jeeps with Avis stickers on the bumper,   but any fine can be negociated.

Forgot to say, there are also some first class full service lodges down there that might or might not set you up with a guide.

No kidding.  A buddy and I were pulled over on the boulevard about 1/2 mile from the airport in Cancun by motorcycle cops for absolutely noting.  Tell the cops delicately to go pound sand, and they will.  They’re just looking for an easy buck and if you make it hard for them, they will leave you alone.

I was pulled over in Tulum, I was speeding (long story).   The kind policeman reduced my fine from $ 160 to $ 20 after a bit of haggling and paying in cash on the spot.

I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news, but I wouldn’t waste my money again fly fishing near cancun.  I’ve gone twice now on day trips to the north end of cancun, and while it looks like decent water, the fishing has been very poor.  The 2 trips I did have luck on were fishing way to the south in the ascension bay area – but, that is a hike if you are staying near cancun.  If you are staying further south near Playa Del Carmen or Tulum, its a much shorter drive.  If you’re closer to Cancun proper, check out the deep sea charters.  We took a chance and booked thru our resort because we heard the sailfish were in, and sure enough, went out and hooked 6 of them in one morning, then hit some reefs on the way back.  I would do that again before fly fishing that area.  Let me know if you have any other questions, I’ll try and help.

Thanks for the advice.  I’m not 100% sure we’re going to try to fish when there, but wanted to see if there were viable options.  I won’t have time to venture out, so it would be something in Cancun proper.  Thanks to everyone for the advice.

Be careful off resort in Mexico.  It isn’t the best place to go venturing around.

It’s amazing how the “safety” has changed over the last 10 years.  There was a time we’d take the public bus to venture south of Playa del Carmen or the public ferry to Isla Majares.  Now we rarley leave the resort.  Kids may have something to do with how adventurous we are now too and how we’ve probably become more risk adverse.

If you get out of Cancun there is very little crime, Playa is great and I will be after bonefish in feb on Cozumel. Diving and fly fishing not too bad. Like anything else or any place, if you invite crime it might be forced to show up. However I am in Playa or Cozumel a few times year and crime is the last thing I would worry about. Just be a smart traveler. BR

It has been many, many years since I’ve been to Cancun, but on the two trips I’ve taken there, we had pretty good fishing.  You just have to connect with the right guide and have the right expectations.

We chased baby tarpon and snook in the mangroves and then hit the reefs for yellowtail and other various random fish.  I had a really good time.  One night we went out after dark into the mangroves – that was bait fishing with live fish, but we caught fish until we were tired.

Like I said, have the right expectations though.  There was a lot of talk down there about fishing for permit and bonefish, but I didn’t see much sign of either one.  If I had my heart set on those fish, it would have been a long, disappointing trip.  And the baby tarpon were very small, so if you went looking for a big tarpon like you see on t.v., it would be disappointing.  But the little ones were fun on light tackle, and it was fast action.  The snook, on the other hand, were almost TOO big – we’d catch baby tarpon for a while, and then a big snook would hit out of nowhere like a freight train and charge for the mangroves.  More often that not, the combination of surprise, light tackle, and big snook would result in a quick broken line, but we got a handful in.

Even though the fish were small, I liked the inshore fishing much better than the couple days of deep sea fishing we did.  We caught some big barracuda and a couple bonito, but I’m just not a big fan of trolling – if the fishing is slow, it becomes just a long, expensive boat ride.

    A couple other thoughts:

    1.  Bring insect repellent, especially if you fish at night like we did.  The no-see-ums in the mangroves were the worst I’ve ever seen anywhere on the planet.

    2.  Bring your own gear.  Even the good guides down there seem to have ancient stuff in rough condition.

    3.  Set your heart for numbers of small fish instead of a big tarpon or permit, and be flexible enough to go after whatever is biting.  On the day the flats were slow, we went off to the reef and chased the yellowtails and saved the day.

By the way, a lot of the little touristy places around Cancun will offer “deep sea fishing” charters.

In case anyone is intrested in a do it yourself trip.   I found the info from a trip I took a few years ago.

A bit of a drive from Cancun, less so from some of the other resorts south of there.  The “mermaid” is a trip, the guides were great and so was the fishing.
No ATM’s no credit cards, cash only but it was not much money.

Im also looking to do some fishing in or around Cancun, going there for my honey moon and plan on getting out of the resort for a day. I looked up yellow dog outfitters and they listed a few guides that do day trips, even arrange for a shuttle to meet the guide…I assumed it would be pretty decent since yellow dog is involved? Anyone have any experience with doing that sort of trip?
