The last two weeks I have been making a regular trip up to a SE tail-water for the 9 AM Trico hatch.  This is some of my favorite fishing.  8 1/2 foot 3 wt, 12 foot 6 or 7x leader and #22 and #24 flies.  I am always amazed as to the number of bigger fish I catch each year on the tiny Tricos.  Today I brought a 15″ Rainbow and a 16″ Brown to hand.  They were nice fish but the highlight of the morning was getting ole Bubba Brown (something in the 20-22″ range) to eat my fly 3 times.

One of the truths of Trico fishing is that there will be many more takes than hook ups, and many more hook ups than landed fish.

If you have not tried this, you should give it a try.

Agreed.  It is a fun hatch (spinner fall) to fish, especially since the flies are so small and the feeding is so prolific.  It can be frustrating at times if you’re the only fly the fish aren’t taking.
